Can anybody name the show (I think only one season) either in the 1980s or early 1990s involving the live hunt for a contestant in which members of the public joined in to help the pursuers find the contestant in the hour the show was broadcast?

I was thinking of that programme but I couldn't recall the title. The chap in the helicopter used to talk to someone called "Mikey" and he had a kind of laser type "zapper" which he would aim at the contestants. My doubt about this being the programme would be that I can't remember the public being involved. There was another programme like this on Channel 4 which was presented by Richard Littlejohn. I looked it up on IMDB, it was called "Wanted" and it went out in 1996.

Now one where we all hunt Richard Littlejohn and then zap him with laser guns, that sounds much more entertaining

I remember this. Didn't the contastants play as a pair and were given tasks to perform and locations to travel to during the course of the game?

It was presented by Annabel Croft.

I seem to remember the public being involved phoning in to announce sightings of the contestants/interceptor depending on whose side they were on?

That was definitely the C4 Wanted programme which was decidely more gripping and slightly sinister.

Interceptor was more of a remake of Treasure Hunt with the obstacle of trying not to get shot in the backpack.

The show centred around three groups of two people "on the run" around the country for one week and they had to evade capture by one of the shows 'trackers' - A person who chases after the group of people and has the challenge of videoing them.

The prize for evading capture? £1000 for every day the team don't get filmed. And, to make things that bit harder, each group had to do a specific task every day to expose themselves, such as go ice skating for an hour, where the tracker would have a chance to catch them if they weren't very careful where and when they went. In addition to this, the public could phone in and give tipoffs to where the team were to aid the tracker - if the information helped, it would be they who got the £1000 instead of the team.

And then the big climax - the part which was by far the most exciting - The actual live show. In this show, the three groups had to find a phonebox and with the use of a live camera, were linked up to the show for the hour it was on. For that hour, they had to stay in that phonebox while the tracker tried to find them with the help of both the Wanted team and the public. If the team managed to evade capture for the entire hour, they were granted another week on the show and another chance to earn another £1000 a day.

I remember one team - the best team - were two guys from Liverpool who managed to stay on the show for around five weeks, raking in the money for the lack of times they were ever videoed by one of the trackers. I also remember how the public used to actually guard the phonebox in which the team was in, as for the tracker to win, he had to open the phonebox in which the team were hiding.
