You're absolutely right Ray, even The Beatles and Gerry and the Pacemakers did!

I was probably thinking more of the upturned wing-collars that Gentlemen once wore, though I think those imbecile brained hooray henrys, whom I can't stand, still do for their drunken get togethers, but I bet they're not stiffened with starch!

I was always more 'Man at C&A' myself lol, I still am, though I have to get the Ferry over to Calais to be one these days!

I am more like Tom Courtney in The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner these days Mark.

I seem to spend my days in vest, shorts, or swimming trunks.

I really miss getting dressed up, I still have all the gear, but never have an opportunity to wear it, apart from funerals.

I like Joanne Froggatt in it as well as the rosy-cheeked red-headed cook, I know her face from somewhere!

Mark O, Joanne wasn't the redhead cook but the eldest daughter's ladies maid!

Could this be the new Upstairs Downstairs?

ITV gambles on Sunday night viewers getting the Downton Abbey habit

Not for viewers in Scotland. Obviously.

Well are you not the lucky ones to be able to have points of view on Downton Abbey. Alas we in the STV region have been denied this pleasure- we got Billy Connelly - yet again - in the Arctic. Needless to say we watched BBC. do the advertisers realise that they are losing revenue? Also a lot of people can get into other regions of Scotland and can watch it - again denying the advertisers.

She was cully, I should have inserted a comma or something in my sentence to separate the two, the Cook came back to me when I thought of the film 'East is east', she worked in the fish and chip shop, Lesley Nicol she is, looking at her pics it's amazing what a bit of make-up can do!

After watching this I really enjoyed it.

I do feel sorry for Mr Bates though, poor soul . I do hope the character played by Rob-James Collier (can`t say that I`ve changed my mind. I`m still not struck by his acting abilities I`m afraid) and that awful woman he is cohoots with get their comeuppance

    xx

I rarely watch anything live these days. I record all the essential TV for the week and then catch up. I've just watched this and LOVE it. Great fun.

There is one thing that puzzles me with this surprisingly (I didn’t rate Gosford Park) good serial and that is that because the heir apparent is a cousin the family would lose the estate, BUT the deceased heir apparent who went down with the Titanic was also (only) a cousin.

Why does this living cousin make that much difference to the incumbent family?

Or have I completely missed something somewhere............

Alec, I think the point is the heir apparent who went down with the Titanic was 1)closer to the family and as aristocratic as the Downton Abbey family (same schools, similar backgrounds etc) and 2)was engaged or assumed to be engaged to the eldest daughter of the earl with his blessing and the rest of the family (ie the money and estate would remain in their family). The new heir is tenuously upper middle class at best.

Funny what we like and don't like, was really disappointed with Gosford Park and yet others rave about it, same with Out of Africa

I think it was mentioned in Episode 1 that the Downton Abbey estate was the subject of an entailment, this was a proceedure that allowed the aristocracy to keep their land in one piece so that it could not be split up if there was more than one heir and it all must go to the nearest male relative. This was important in the days when agriculture was the main source of income.

The same thing happens in Pride and Prejudice. Mr Bennett's estate has an entailment and since all his offspring are daughters the estate on his death must go to the nearest male relative, the dreadful Mr. Collins, who was a distant cousin of Mr Bennett.

But the system of entailments died out in the 1880s, and to have it existing in Downton Abbey in 1912 is a bit unlikely.

An entail is involved in The Adventure of the Priory School (1905). I thought it was mentioned in the first episode that Hugh Bonneville could break the entail but had decided not to. Maybe he will threaten to do so later for dramaitc reasons?

Just heard that it has proved to be so popular that there will be a second series next year.

Don't know about anyone else, but I am delighted!

How can I put this ('scuse pun)........er, in last week's episode when the Albanian diplomat seduces Lady Mary in her bedroom he says something along the lines of "her honour (virginity) will not be lost" and she mutters "will it hurt?".

Now just what was going on here? I'm not suggesting anything but hum hum how was this going to come about or was he just being a naughty lying male wanting his wicked way?

Her honour meaning her reputation. I can't remember if they did the wicked deed or if he pegged it beforehand. I'm rapidly losing interest in Downton Abbey. Maggie Smith is hilarious, though. She's always a clown, no matter how fancy her finery!

It's just OK, the fairground scenes were very flat last night but Maggie Smith has some very funny lines

I am loving every minute of it, the acting, photography, and costumes,

Everything about it is just perfection, well for me anyway.

I transferred the first three episodes to disc, and watched them all in one session yesterday. What a difference it made to see it without annoying adverts every ten minutes. It was so much easier to get into the story, and far more enjoyable.
