Well I'd have been about 8 - 10 years old when it was first shown. A silly man in a mac and beret is pretty funny when you are that young. I do agree with you now I've revisited it 30 plus years later

Thanks EHV and your Lordship. Are the Xmas Specials released by themselves, or as part of a package ?

I have this one.

Amazon.co.uk: Porridge - The Christmas Specials:... Amazon.co.uk: Porridge - The Christmas Specials:...
Do a search on Amazon.co.uk.

Note these are region 2 DVD's which shouldn't be a problem for many DVD players. There is a simple handset hack that makes many DVD players region free. I did this with my Sears DVD player which was $30 from Sears

My favourite line from "Porridge" was at his medical when the doctor asked "Are you now or have you ever been a practising homosexual?" to which he replied "What, with these feet?"

My favourite scene was actually in the pilot when he was being transported to Slade Prison, The van had broken down due to fletcher "watering down" the petrol and they were staying in an empty cottage. During the night Fletcher decided to escape, he ran across the moors for hours only to end up back at the same cottage and was'nt even missed!

That was "Prisoner and Escort".......hilarious.

I loved the piece from the episode"The Harder They Fall" when Fletcher is telling Mr McKay about a boxer he knew who suffered brain damage. McKay fell for it and asked what became of him....................

"He joined the prison service; he's doing very well"

A Happy and Healthy New Year to all

Just watch the body language and the change in voice when he delivers that line, quality.

There are 2 Christmas special episodes of Porridge. The first one is called No Way Out and the second is called The Desperate Hours.

I purchased these Christmas specials on one BBC DVD which also includes the nomination film for Britain's Best Sitcom.

I'm disappointed to say I missed this. I was a big fan of Richard Beckinsale, where and when was it on. Just wondering if its likely to get repeated, unless its on a Sky channel I assume probably not.

Its probably sacrilege to say so but I have never been a huge fan of the work of David Jason but I have alwys admired his fine perormance as the elderly inmate Banco in Porridge.

The pilot Prisoner and Escort was filmed near me in the village of Bedlinog near Merthyr Tydfil.

One of the funniest lines is:

Fletcher: "See that screw over there, the tall one, Barraclough, the one who looks like Arthur Askey on stilts".
