Talking Porridge

Just watched an episode of Porridge (the very first episode I believe) - still a gem after 33 years.

Wonderful viewing and probably just beats Reggie Perrin for the best sitcom ever. I can watch the spin-off movie time and time again.

let us not forget Richard Beckinsale, to die at such a young age is tragic. They were a great team.

I've got most of the "Porridge" series on VHS (NTSC).

Brilliant stuff!! ("Norman Stanley Fletcher.....")

I didn't know there was a follow-on series! I'll add that to my Xmas list...

Fletcher is one of my TV heroes.

The whole series is packed with great lines:

"what from here ?!"

"I'm only ere cos of tragic circumstance; I got caught."

"Sidcup it were".

etc etc

"Oh! Pete!"

I have all 3 series - including the 2 Christmas specials - also the film, and the follow-up series Going Straight.

They are all highly entertaining.

I too have all 3 series on DVD including the Christmas Specials. As an expat here in the States I've bought a few comedies on DVD, part nostalgia, part looking for British humor. I have been disappointed by a few such as 'Some mothers' and 'The Goodies' to name a couple. This has not been the case with Porridge, which has stood the test of time quite well IMHO. Still great after all this time. I won't mention 'Going straight' though
