Well, we know they supported England (because of the famous episode where they try to avoid hearing the result until they can watch the match that night on TV). The series is assumed to be set in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, so we assume they supported Newcastle United. They slipped into the Second Division in 1961 and didn't return to the First Division until 1966, hence their moans about their 'rubbishy' football team. When the series returned in colour they had more reason to be proud.

Perhaps you're recalling that James Bolam who played Terry was born in Sunderland billy?

We know Bob at least supported Newcastle; there was a scene where he's in bed with Thelma and he's wearing a Newcastle Utd shirt (I can't remember which episode).

It`s a fair assumption to suppose it`s Newcastle; but I`ve always thought their team remained unknown so as not to upset any folks in the North East; and this is why I don`t think it`s Newcastle because in this clip Terry mentions about their teams lack of chances of being in Europe; but when this was aired Newcastle had already won the Inter City Fairs Cup in`69. Just my thoughts fellas. Relevant dialogue from around 7-30 onwards.

Newcastle, there was the episode where Terry was nicked for fighting with Rangers fans and met Bob in the police station.

I recognised one scene in Newcastle. It was in the district of Gosforth, in the centre, around the corner from my old school. Looked like they'd just come out of the library. The swimming baths are just a bit further up that street, whose name eludes me now.

Absolutely no doubt in my mind that it was Newcastle - off hand, I can't recall Sunderland ever being mentioned in any context by either of them though I'm sure someone will prove me wrong.

Useless information - at the time, Mrs Fell lived next door to one of the members of the Fairs Cup winning team.

They had a bet with Brian Glover I think......over the result and whether they would be able to avoid finding out the score

That episode was ``One for the Road`` and they never mention Newcatle by name once, also take a look at the photo above Terrys bed in this clip, sure don`t look like a Newcastle team photo to me... unless you can tell me when they changed strip from black & white stripes

I always thought they supported Newcastle but after reading the thread I wasn't sure ,especially after seeing the photo above Terrys bed which is obviously Sunderland .I found an article on the BBC's inside out webpage from 2004 ,where It states the" likely lads " supported Newcastle and it seems to be borne out in a Q&A with Rodney bewes mentioning the names of Bobby moncur and supermac .James Bolam was from Sunderland ,maybe this explains the picture ,as I cannot see a mackem having a picture of their detested rivals on his wall
I am now curious as to whether there is an episode where NU are mentioned by name ,whether it be TLL or WHTTLL .I know WHTTLL exists in its entirety , but think some episodes from TLL were destroyed

I'm sure that in one episode a comment is made about an incidental character along the lines of"it could be worse ,he could be a Sunderland supporter".I seem to remember references to West Hartlepool in either the original series of WHTTLL.My perception was that they lived in a generic North East town.

One of the best, classic Likely Lads' football scenes ...
    14th June 1970 World Cup ... England 2 West Germany 3 ... at approx. 3.00 mins in ...

It probably would be Rangers fans that was mentioned,As the year Newcastle won the Fairs cup they beat Rangers over two legs in the Semi-final and there was crowd trouble at St James Park.

I was at the first leg at Ibrox,But at only 9 years old I was deemed too young to go to the return leg,However My Father was there and I recall Him telling Me.
