Christmas edition of Downton: most recorded programme ever
by Anita Singh
The DOWNTON ABBEY Christmas special was the most recorded programme ever, with 3.5 million viewers watching it after the event.
The ITV1 period drama, in which Matthew Crawley and Lady Mary finally cemented their on-off romance, came a distant fouth in the Christmas Day ratings, with an audience of 8.1 million against EASTENDERS' 9.9million. But newly released figures for consolidated viewing, which take into account those who caught up with the show on Sky+ or other personal video recorders, put the audience at 12.1 million, making it the most-watched programme of the festive season.
The consolidation figure for EASTENDERS on BBC1 was 11.3 million.
Even with the consolidated figures, the BBC dominated the Dec 25 schedule, with seven of the 10 top-rated shows, including DOCTOR WHO, ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS and the Queen's Christmas message.
