I can understand why some people are "rubbed up" the wrong way with the guys but i think you have to accept that Top Gear is no longer a "Which" type car programee now its just three men behaving badly and i for one think its a hoot!!!!

In complete contrast I actually switched off Long Way Down last night because it was boring. How many times have we seen "stars" on documentaries humbled by African poverty, and go on about it all the time as if we the viewers were totally unaware of it! Perhaps they should go on about African corruption as the Sierra Leone man did in the Channel 4 Dispatches programme the other week. He said Bob Geldof's "make povertry history" crusade should be "make corruption history" and then reeled off the obscene fortunes stolen by the African leaders of "poor" countries over the years, most of it international aid money, and the figures for some were in the billions! In Ethiopia back in the 90s they were given £6m for building irrigation schemes to ensure than never again would drought produce a famine, which was how Zim became such a successful farming country (before Mugabe gave all the farms away to his cronies as holiday homes). A few years later Ethiopia had another famine and when asked "What about the irrigation projects!" the Minister being interviewed denied all knowledge of the funding! Unfortunately this is the way it is and handing over money usually means that a few members of the inner circle open Swiss bank accounts, and also buy luxury apartments in Paris and London! Human greed is an ugly thing. The thing is, its usually buried under facade and loop-hole. Greed and disregard of those less well off is world wide... and only seen as ugly as it is when the lid gets pulled off. Man is the only creature who is parasitical on his own kind.

I'm keen on gardening, I'm mad on cars, love top gear, dislike Monty Don's round the world programme. I saw the Sports Relief special and thought it was absolute rubbish, cringe-making in the extreme and the guys' only excuse is that it was being done for charity. The gardener (and snob) in me couldn't help but notice the awful, housing estate banality of the Redgrave house and its empty, bereft-of-an-idea 'garden,' as well as the self importance of the man himself.

I am certainly no petrol head, and never bothered with it, until the 'New' Top Gear started several years back. But once i had seen the antics of Clarkson, Hammond and May, i couldn't resist tuning in every Sunday night. Like the millions of us who may never get to drive the Bugatti Veyron but would love to, I am hooked. At least we are seeing someone obviously enjoy themselves and letting us know how it feels. Even if we only get a small bit of the experience its well worth it. With Clarkson as the leader of this trio of naughty schoolkids who never grew up. The antics they get up to every week, with the odd "epic" thrown in, ie: across Africa in a 20 year old front wheel drive vehicle, or a race to the poll against a sled dog team, or a jet/train to switzerland against a supercar, etc etc. It is classic unmissible viewing, i', almost embarassed to admit :)
Great entertainment, dont ruin it by letting "them" change it. |

But you'd think they could reverse a caravan! A little contrived I feel, but a grudging admittance that it is a laugh. My Rover 200 has done 195,540 miles with no problems. When it gets to 200,000 I've promised myself I'll hunt Clarkson down and run over his size 14 feet.
