I heard that Hammond and particularly Clarkson where not too happy to have to be over in America for long periods, without there families. Particularly Clarkson, who never bothers much to hide his dislike of all things American. So the show with them in it looking at American cars was scrapped. So they are trying it with some American no name petrol heads. The yanks as ever wanted to change it, take it out of the Hangar into a flash studio etc etc..

Sadly my skills do not go that far, I erased the 'Strand cigarette' but it then looked as if he had a finger up his nose. I did come across this though.

Sir Ian McKellen says that Laurence Olivier - while director of the National Theatre in the 60s - stocked the cigarette machine with only one brand: Olivier. It was a lucrative line. His son Tarquin said Olivier made "tuppence a thousand", which amounted to a handy £40,000 a year. Tarquin dismisses the claim they were blended by Olivier himself, as "nonsense".

'Top Gear' is the best show on TV by miles.

Clarkson does appear to be bombastic and "controversial" - but it's done with his tongue firmly in his cheek.

I just wish Captain Slow would get his hair cut, the scruff.

Excuse me, sincere question here - did Olivier really have a brand of fags named after him ? It's not out of the question as I know in the 30's the British Union Of Fascists (Blackshirts) had their own brand !

Reading the Sunday Express today,it appears the format for the programme has been sold to Australia and the USA,with both countries having their own Clarkson,Hammond and May.

I thought it was a bit flat last night. Maybe I've just become accustomed to the thrash a car round the track review, celebrity guest, comic challenge format. I saw someone categorise it as a big-budget version of "Last of the Summer Wine" with cars rather than a bath tub go-kart. Some truth in that.

Having watched lots of repeats of repeats of repeats of Top Gear over the months on both Dave and BBC3, I was hoping that the format of the new series would have seen some fresh ideas.

The celebrities on were a couple of numpties, and the predicability of the show is getting a bit tired with the usual Ferrari road test, the silly cars routine this time in the guise of police vehicles and of course the Blackadder style of speaking and humour "If you thought this was an expensive car, yoooooo'd be wrong!" "If you think this car looks like a dung beetle with all the performance of a snail in a drought, yooooooo'd be right!" It's just soooooooo tedious and if anyone spoke to you like that in real life you'd probably slap them!

I was channel hopping between Italy's dire performance against Spain in the Euro quarter final, and it was a toss up between Italy's negative approach to the game of football and Top Gear as to which was the dreariest!
