1960's Crime Drama

As a youngster in the late sixties I remember a crime drama in about six parts on a friday eveming. It was I thing about a gang who stole Gold and the episodes featured the various villans and police involved. The Gang leader was played by Peter Vaughn who went on to feature in the film Straw Dogs.
I bo not remember the name but it seemed to feature a lot of outdoor locations around I presume , London.
Does anyone remember it?

Thank you Graeme, a very interesting review. Will have to get the DVD set as I was too young to fully appreceate it.
I did not realise it had 13 episodes but I remember the one involving the Marksman.
