Default favourite episode of the Baron

For me the Maze. Excellent and some good locations.

The two parter The Island. A rare chance for the guest actors in an ITC series to have a bit of time to work on their characters. I mostly prefer the non-espionage episodes but this one was excellent.

Probably The Maze for me too but I also like the other two-parter Masquerade/The Killing. There are quite a few strong episodes in this series such as The Edge Of Fear, There's Someone Close Behind You, You Can't Win Them All and The Persuaders but the worst one is Red Horse,Red Rider. Very cheap!

The Baron is often seen as one of the 'lesser' ITC series. IMHO it is one of the better ones, far superior to Department S, The Champions, Jason King and Randall and Hopkirk. Steve Forrest is excellent as the Americanised 'John Mannering' and Sue Lloyd is easy on the eye as 'Cordelia'. I also rate Strange Report highly as well.

I think The Baron has a consistently higher standard of storylines than the others as they had more than their fair share of stinkers but when Department S and Randall & Hopkirk are good I prefer them to The Baron. I know I'm in a minority but I couldn't get into Strange Report, the 3 leads didn't seem to gel to me.

I thought I was in the minority for liking it. On various ITC polls it always seems to come near the bottom or not feature at all.

far superior to Randall & Hopkirk, I assume that you are talking about the Vic Reeves disaster

No ... the 60s one. I liked Mike Pratt (a very good actor) but I've always found Kenneth Cope to be an annoying actor and Annette Andre, while very sexy, was IMHO a very dull actress. I could never get worried about Randall's fate as we knew there was a hereafter so when he was threatened with death we knew he wasn't facing oblivion. I also felt that some of the stories used the supernatural element to disguise bad plotting. That's also the main reason why I wasn't much of a fan of The Champions. I like to see my detectives get out of a jam by using their noodles and not by using 'super powers' or ghostly mates. Regular super heroes (Superman et al) are OK, their villains are usually 'super' as well, so the protagonists fought on a level playing field. I always felt that Randall and The Champions were cheating!

The Legions of Ammak has a very entertaining turn by Peter Wyngarde playing both his regular suave charmer and the seedy actor hired to impersonate him. Plus George Murcell and Isa Miranda.

'I've only got one spare'

'Well, borrow one !'
