    Secret Knowledge: Stradivarius and Me
    Presented by Clemency Burton-Hill

Watched a little gem of a programme last night on the history of the Stradivarius violin presented with immense enthusiasm by the gorgeous writer, presenter, violinist and actress Clemency Burton-Hill. She is even allowed to very carefully hold with white gloves, but not play, the legendary Messiah Stradivarius, the most famous and valuable violin in the world.

The name of 17th-century violin maker Antonio Stradivari - or Stradivarius as he is usually known - is one that sends shivers down the spine of music lovers the world over. During his lifetime Stradivari made over 1,000 instruments, about 650 of which still survive.

Their sound is extraordinary and for any violinist the opportunity to play one is a great privilege. Clemency indulges in her lifelong passion for the instrument as she explores the mysterious life and lasting influence of Stradivari - through four special violins on display at this summer's Stradivarius exhibition at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford.

Clemency is joined by 2002 Young Musician of the Year winner Jennifer Pike to put some of the violins in the exhibition through their paces ... and asks why is the Strad still regarded as the Holy Grail amongst violins?

Highly recommended and well worth catching on the BBCiPlayer.
    30 minutes of pure joy.

I watched that programme as well, very interesting and the presenter seemed in awe when she held the violin called the Messiah. Still very enjoyable tv.

Thanks for the heads-up. An interesting program but I always want a bit more detail.
