I agree. Beautifully done right up to the last 30 minutes - at which point it collapsed like an overcooked souffle.
I read Cranford itself for A level and don't remember it at all but I understand that they took themes & characters from three of Gaskell's 'Knutsford' novels. The result was that there were far too many stories to tidy up all at once. This smacks of a failure of nerve over the ability of the original material to sustain the viewer's interest over a short series; in spite of a heavyweight cast and production. |
