Jonathon Ross is definitely worth 1,000 BBC journalists. Trouble is, he's not worth one decent presenter, film critic, chat show host or Radio 2 DJ.

We do not get Jonathan Woss in Australia - yet.

I must comment on Parky's show though. The constant use of canned laughter and applause during his show drives me up the wall. It is not very well edited either.
It shows how unfunny some of his guests are if so much canned laughter is required to try and convince us that the live studio audience are enjoying themselves.
I also find that Parky is tending to mumble more with his questions. Old age has caught up with him and I am glad that he has announced his retirement from television.

Dave.

Canned laughter? Are you sure? It's normally in front of a live audience - you see them there.

Unless they add more laughter for the Australians

My opinion is opposite to yours, when you think of talented people who have had to struggle financially I feel it is unfair that this individual is paid so well.

Spoken from someone who obviously hasn't watched the Parky show lately.

That's my whole point Steve. The canned laughter and applause sounds ridiculous but obviously the studio is not getting the reaction they need from the live audience. The final product has been "padded" with sound effects - and not very well edited either.

I've seen it when it's been shown here recently and haven't noticed any added applause or laughter. It might be just added for the antipodeans.

I find it hard to criticise Mr. Ross. After all, if I was offered £6,00,000 or the chance to preserve the jobs of 1,000 other men..... what would I do?...... Let he who is free of fault, cast the first coin....

No, don't criticise him. The fault lies entirely with the bloated management cronies who offered him the money and the fatcat governors who allow such things to go on. The BBC should not be paying 'competitive' salaries any more than it should be making 'competitive' programmes. It should be paying a 'reasonable' salary to all it's staff and if any of them feel they can do better elsewhere in the hothouse private sector, they should wave goodbye to them and move up the next talented wannabe. In the same way they should be giving creative people the chance to follow their dreams by making programmes that the 'private sector' would never dream of making, for fear of not attracting advertisers. What's the point of it otherwise?

I daresay the 'private sector' use BBC salaries to justify their own bloated excesses, just as the BBC uses theirs, and so the vicious wheel turns.

Well, I actually perfer him on the radio. On Radio 2 his saturday show is usually pretty good. He is very fast and sharp although in this instance he should have kept his motor mouth shut. But yeah, £18 million is a lot of money. He reminds me in some ways of Simon Dee who I guess was the Jonathon Ross of his day in the late sixties. If Ross isn't careful, people will soon grow tired of him.

I'll just leave my coat where it is thanks!!

Lucky you, we have had to suffer this scandalously overpaid "talent" for more years than I care to remember. He makes Premier league footballers appear underpaid by comparison, at least they provide entertainment unlike Mr Smug.

That depends on what you qualify as entertainment. I detest football.
When footballers are paid millions for pointlessly kicking a piece of leather about then in comparison Mr Ross isn't being paid enough!

I think the cleaners and canteen staff would be very happy to get even a quarter of Ross's salary or even a quarter of the amount paid to many of thos z-list "celebrities" every time they appear

I think Simon Dee was paid something like £150 per week, that was in the days when that E Type jag he drove in the opening credits of each show would cost about £3500 to buy new, so possibly not a huge amount but still probably ten times the weekly wage of the average man. I think Dee got the chop because he demanded more money! he was bankrupt within a year of being sacked from his popular show and ended up at one point training to become a bus driver! I reckon if Ross got the sack or never worked again in his life he probably already has a few million stashed away to survive on! How times have changed!...

There was an interesting documentary about Simon Dee on TV last year. After he left the Beeb he went to work for ITV. The programme alleged that he fell out with David Frost and that Frost 'persuaded' the ITV chiefs to put Dee's show on the graveyard slot late at night. Dee's ITV show flopped and he had to sign on for the dole 'cos he'd spent all his cash. He lost his house and his car 'cos they were both rented. Some of the interviewees on the programme commented on Dee's arrogance and belief in his own worth. Most of them couldn't stand him. He did a one-off 'comeback' show at around the same time which was dire. He seemed incredibly bitter about his downfall and blamed everyone else, including MI5, for his inability to get back into TV.

Bats.

Happy Birthday Daddy .... I love you!
