Dee's ITV show flopped and he had to sign on for the dole 'cos he'd spent all his cash. He lost his house and his car 'cos they were both rented. Some of the interviewees on the programme commented on Dee's arrogance and belief in his own worth. Most of them couldn't stand him. He did a one-off 'comeback' show at around the same time which was dire. He seemed incredibly bitter about his downfall and blamed everyone else, including MI5, for his inability to get back into TV.

Its a classic riches to rags story. I do recall reading that for his comeback show he thought he would simply invite all the famous "friends" he had made while hosting the show at the Beeb and that they would all rally round to help him and guest on his new show, or so he thought........surprisngly no one wanted to know or be associated with the fallen star, I think he was indeed a bit of an arogant so and so and not as popular as he thought but I guess he had his 15 minutes of fame. Jonathan Ross has been around for nearly 20 years since "The Last Resort"....I quite liked that too!.....now where did I put my coat!......

I used to enjoy The Last Resort as well .... it's only over the past couple of years that I think Ross has reached his sell by date. One's enjoyment of comedy is such a subjective thing that we're never gonna agree about everything.

I think it's suggesting that you wouldn't get people earning telephone number salaries in the private sector such as Premier League Footballers, City Bankers, Hollywood Films stars. Er, um....

The average earnings in the entertainment world are not that high - most are lucky to make a decent living at all. The press tends to publicise outrageous fortune rather give the true picture of a small number at the top earning incredibly well and the majority not.

Thats the joke that killed the Music Hall !

And yet they somehow neglect to mention the huge salaries (and share options) paid to newspaper editors and owners

I agree with you here Moor. I don't blame Ross for accepting the money, but for the crass way he uses his salary as the basis for humour. He has mentioned his cash on his TV show and on the radio as if we are all expected to pat him on the back and say what a great guy he is.

The BBC IMHO should not have offered that amount of cash to anyone. I don't know how much money Gervais is paid by the BBC, but, like him or not, at least his TV programmes appear to create some prestige and revenue for them. Ross' programmes are not likely to win Emmies or generate huge DVD sales as Gervais' have.

Marlon Brando was once asked how he justified the huge fees he got for film work, he replied 'If they're stupid enough to offer it, I'm not too stupid to turn it down'.

I have a feeling with this whole business that with audiences fragmented by numerous channels and DVDs, downloading etc the moguls are increasingly desperate to find someone who can still pull in viewers and that is driving earnings up so much

Thats the joke that killed the Music Hall !
