Was this the TV premiere? The film was made in1974 and is pretty awful. I can't think why anyone would have been worried by the violence .... it bombed when it was released, so I expect very few watched it on TV

I don't remember any fuss being made about it and I can't find any references to a fuss or it being banned or even dropped from the schedules.

I do remember some sort of controversy surrounding the TV showing of The Gambler in the 80s, but not exactly what it was. This was a time when four letter words were routinely censored for TV showings of films and violence was toned down. It all seems a very long time ago...
