Default BBC Archives: Helen Mirren

News of the release of the Helen Mirren BBC set on R1 in February prompts me to ask if any of these early programmes were believed lost.

If so, it might augur well for other treasures.

Some of those Plays of the Month would be an absolute treasure trove a great actors in great plays. Indeed some of them would be recent ex-west end plays with in some cases the original stage cast.

Thats the joke that killed the Music Hall !

The 'Play of the Month' version The Picture of Dorian Gray that has been released, with Gielgud, Firth and Brett, is outstanding. I wish the BBC would release more of these ... starting with an R2 release for The Changeling.

There are also these Region 1 DVD sets available now of BBC classic plays
from 1970s/1980s

THE NOEL COWARD COLLECTION

THE JUDI DENCH COLLECTION

As for why R1 only....well. N America is a much bigger market than the UK, and Time/Warner have enough cash to pay the BBC for all the rights/clearances etc.
