Default Dead of Night: The Exorcism

Might be worth a viewing!

Dead of Night: The Exorcism

Saturday 22 December
11:10pm - 12:00am
BBC4
A play on the theme of the supernatural, but one that's more concerned with portraying class conflict than ghosts.

Just caught the end of this - the last 15m or so. Looked quite interesting - not the kind of thing that would ever get on TV these days. Sadly its the type of programme BBC4 show only once and then serve up endless repeats of Dawn French or something else. Anyone record it?

Watched the whole thing and was pretty impressed. Interesting and scary. Got rather harrowing at the moment they discovered they were trapped in by blackness - the hammer on the window was very effective, as was the skeleten moment.

For me, it beat a lot of other recently repeated costume ghost stories hands down.

Maybe it helps if you are broadly sympathetic with the politics of the thing. But you have to quite a monster not to be.

I did watch this and recorded it as well.

Made in 1972 it did have a very dated feel to it and initially I was not convinced by it as a drama. However it began to grow on me and I gradually found myself becoming quite intrigued by the unfolding plot. It was definitely a political ghost story and I thought it carried more wait because of this. It actually began to get quite creepy towards the end and I found myself thinking of its complexities afterwards. In many ways it was quite refreshing to watch a drama that unfolded in basically one unchanging studio set, where the performances had to create and carry all of the drama. It had a lot of the stock ghost/horror story scenarios but made them a little more interesting by expressing the political dynamics between the rich and the poor. All in all a bit of a treasure this one!
