Already we are plagued with 'dogs' telling us which channel we're watching and in some cases another 'dog' telling us what's coming up later. I thought that's what TV listings were for. and oh, to see a programme again and not have the final credits squashed and interrupted . . .

Hear, hear Bill.

For some episodes of the recent OLIVER TWIST, which we DID bother with, it was impossible to tell who the main performers were due to the squeezed quarter-screen credits. Appalling !

I must say what an excellent response to this thread and long may it continue?

I too was extremely disappointed with this version of Oliver Twist,. The first episode was more than enough for me. Thanks

And the BBC's break bumpers are adverts in all but name.

And have you noticed on Match of the Day after a match and the manager or player is giving their viewpoint a bar is flashed on screen with "Coming Next ............. v ................"

Why can't they just leave things as they are?

As I said in another thread:
In fact I still find plenty that's well worth watching. But in this multi-channel, reality TV, chef stuffed, universe, you do have to hunt around for the quality more than you used to in the old days

A voice from the other side of the pond.... When I lived there from 79 to 81 I loved British TV for the most part. The complaints I hear everyone voicing can be repeated over here; the speeded up, squashed credits, the inane announcements, substandard productions, et al. When I was there we had 3 channels and I was usually able to find something that caught my interest. During that time period I was amazed at the American shows that were popular; "classics" like CHIPS, Dukes of Hazzard and, yes, I was there when we found out "WHO SHOT JR?!". (I never understood the appeal). We have available over here a little station called BBC America. Its nice to be able to see some newer things from there but, unfortunately they also tend to bring some more questionable items as well ("How Clean is Your House?" comes to mind). Additionally, when they do show something of quality they chop it up with commercials and destroy the storyline. As I have noted someone else in the thread saying "thanks for DVDs". I guess I'll have to content with getting my quality that way; things like Jeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes, As Time Goes By, Inspector Morse, Monty Python, and the like. Maybe we get pickier as we grow older. Just my 2 cents.

Some Days you're the windshield and some days you're the bug...

Tv has never been perfect, but is definately much worse now than it ever was.I only watch it once in a Blue Moon when stuff such as Wire in the Blood is on.Reality TV has killed Television, it is dreadful stuff which I avoid like the plague, and all these cheesy Pop Idol shows which are Rubbish.ITV has become the Netto Channel bargain bin crap, and Channel 4 which was once original and created some great shows is now Terrible.Like some above I watch classic TV via dvds and stuff I can find here and there.D

Just imagine what the advert would have been like if they had been able to make one.

Marvellous stuff!

Back to TV I was impressed with C4's 1983: The Brink of Apocalypse last night.

Im sorry guys , but British TV has become lazy,
they go for the easy option, darts , snooker
endless cookery programmes

what is more self indulgent than cookery programmes ?
the crew get to tuck in at the end.

the truth is, they do nt give a damn any more,
they are all on generous contracts, eg phil and ferne
they do a short stint of presenting, (fern 4 days per week )
then a massive 6 week break in the summer
blink twice and they start their 2 week xmas break !

Its money for old rope

the british public suffer in silence. Tv is no longer for them
they are just irrelevent, only important as tv poll tax payers.

There used to be variety, shows, comics, jugglers, magicians,
there used to be a lot of effort put in, now its the lazy option
of endless consumer programmes or do up my property,
or ...........a property abroad etc

all this junk keeps revolving round and round
then they fill in the gaps with endless soaps
either home grown or from Ozzieland

Colby City, wot is that all about? enless conversations, people
come and go its nothing, its meaningless

Its really one gigantic job creation scheme like most of the soap operas

Where's todays avengers, wheres todays saint ?

in short, where's all the quality gone, wheres all the effort gone ?

Truth is that the BBC and the ITV companies are sat on mountains of
money and they don t give a damn about the general public
to them, we just don t exist

British TV RIP
