Question What became of John Nightingale?

One of the stars of When the Boat Comes In, John Nightingale was a promising serious actor - he did great guest turns in Thriller and Colditz - but after appearing in a Play for Today in 1980 (Thicker Than Water), he seems to have disappeared.

IMDB doesn't have a death-date for him so hopefully he is still with us. Does anyone know if he is still acting? And why did he leave our screens so abruptly?

TV.com seem to think he's been in Mutant X and Queer As Folk...

...but someone on Knowhere seems to think he died in 1980...
Knowhere Contacts UK: North Shields

Since the IMDb doesn't mention Mutant X or Queer As Folk, I think it's more likely he might have died.

There are two John Nightingales listed on IMDb.

I discovered that they've done this with Jeanne Hepple; a London-born actress who spent some time in the States. She is Jeanne Hepple (I) for her American career and (II) for her British one and, if you put the two together, there is a clear gap in the career of JH (II) into which JH (I)'s fits in perfectly.

The two John Nightingales may or may not be the same person.

The IMDb does list John Nightingale as being in Queer as Folk, but they've listed that as John Nightingale (II) rather than John Nightingale (I) where all the British actor's other credits seem to be

It looks like there were two actors called John Nightingale, one in the UK & one in Canada (who also worked in the US & Brazil), and they were both working at about the same time. Confusing.

But the last thing the British John Nightingale is credited for before that was in 1980 and there's a long gap before that episode of QAF in 2000

I can change/correct the IMDb listings, but only when I'm sure which is correct.
Maybe it's TV.com that got these two actors mixed up

That's what I found as well
As regards Jeanne Hepple, if you are sure the credits are all for the same person then you (or I) can merge them into one listing

According to a poster on this web page (Knowhere Contacts UK: North Shields), he died in 1980 aged 37.

Were you wrongly assuming that the credit displayed for Queer as Folk was for the British version when in fact it was for the US version, filmed partly in Canada?

You're right, the episode with a John Nightingale in the cast is the American version so that is probably the Canadian actor

TV.com must have merged the listings of the two actors

A follow up on that Knowhere board could be in order to ask if the poster that said Nightingale died in 1980 can remember where that came from. The IMDb will need a bit more than rumour and gossip.
