Many thanks for the reply Mark. For a long time I thought it was Philip Davis but the IMBD didn't tally. It's really only him that I remember (vaguely) apart from the music. The part is credited to John Fowler but he seems to have stopped appearing in anything much after the mid-80's. He is listed as being in Scum so maybe that'll be the easiest for me to track down to get a look at the faces.

There's a lot of them I'd like to see now. I was around early teenage years when many were broadcast. I recall Blue remembered Hills and loving it. I was going to get a Denis Potter box set but cash-flow prevented it at the time. Now I can't seem to find it. Not all these discs make it to Australia. I'm definitely going to get an all region player with the next upgrade!

Cheers again

Yeah, that's me. Billy Balthorpe, the man with no name.

'To encourage the others'.

Watch & weep that our leaders were once like that.....................

Question Play for Today

Does anyone remember No Tram To Lime Street, circa 1958-59, or Red Sails in the Sunset, from some time in the sixties / seventies ? Both of these I believe were in the Play for Today category and were truly great viewing. Anyone got a copy? I would recommend the repeating of these two, and no doubt others, to any channel programmer who is looking to boost flagging viewer figures. Lets face it the content of some of the current output would prove a good replacement for anaesthetic.

I loved the Play for Todays, to me they were what good drama was all about. Why dont the BBC repeat them?

I remember an excellent play starring Alun Armstrong as a teacher on a school trip. Cant remember if this was a Play for Today, think it may have just been a stand alone drama, excellent never the less.

I think Play For Today was axed because of it's perceived left wing views. By 1984 Margret Thatcher began putting pressure on the BBC which she thought was run by reds anyway. We'll probably find in years to come there was a very real possibility that the BBC might have been privitised.

bbc4 repeated 'hard labour' 2 weeks ago, 'the flipside of dominick hyde' last saturday and 'another flip for dominick hyde' is to be shown this saturday-great viewing as i'd only seen 'robin redbreast' and 'a photograph'-'boys and girls come out to play' sounds interesting

''no diggin'!!!!!!''

Re: the recent repeats of Plays for Today on BBC4 - is this an ongoing season of repeats, does anyone know?

There were 325 Plays for Today and almost 200 Wednesday Plays: I can't understand why repeats are such a rarity. BBC4 is the ideal place to show them.

Did you find out any more info about what John Fowler is doing at the moment. He was in loads of Childrens programmes when I was a kid eg played the Artful Dodger in The Further adventures of Oliver Twist. Last I saw of him was in one of the opening scenes in Widows when he was a joy rider being chased by the police. I believe his nickname was Foxy.
