Smile Ralph Vaughn Williams,New Year's Day

There was a three hour programme on New Year's morning about Ralph Vaughn Williams. I was working on the night before,so I never got around to recording it (slept in the following day). Does any know if it is out on DVD yet,or did anyone record it?

Mrs Bat's Mum and Dad had it on VHS 'cos she borrowed it off them. I will check to see if they still have the tape or on their hard drive. If it is on tape they'll probably let you have it, if it's on the hard drive they may able to run you off a copy. If not, we're stuffed!

Bats.

Edit - a quick phone call later .... sorry, the tape has been recorded over and they have deleted it from the hard drive! Sorry, mate.

"Boom boom a baby .... Banham Zoo .... Banana pants! Hahahaha"

I missed this also Then I rarely look at what might be on C5! The prog was called O Thou Transcendent: The Life of Ralph Vaughan Williams. I've checked the "usual" places without any luck alas.

A further search reveals a DVD of this is available:

Amazon.co.uk: O Thou Transcendent - The Life Of Ralph Vaughan Williams [2007]: DVD: Tony Palmer

Or £13 notes at HMV.

Missed this too - as an ardent RVW enthusiast I will probably get the DVD. Did anyone else see the programme - was it worth watching?

I thought I had it, but when I checked it was At the Haunted end of the Day - Walton, not RVW. Sorry,

Thanks for the replies. I am definately going to get the DVD. Right now I am listening to The Lark Ascending and then it will be The Norfolk Rhapsody (lovely tune,Bats, which I am sure will complement your lovely county).
RVW liked country walking and his music summed up the English countryside. Here's hoping that this year's commemoration of his death in 1957 will bring more attention to this great composer's work.

Sod Gervais....you obviously have refined taste in music.

I once had the sublime experience of sitting on my lonesome in the middle of the Orchestral Stalls in Carnegie Hall listening to Sir Neville Marriner rehearse RVW's sublime Fifth Symphony.

I was wearing my bulbous Berghaus duvet jacket and Rita, (my violinist friend, and desk partner to Ken Sillitoe) told me that at one point S'Nev leaned forward and enquired "Who's the bloody Michelin man sat out there ?"

I implore you to check out this symphony if you're unaware of it's charms.
It is imbued with more English poignancy and repose than a Ginsters pasty picnic in Swaledale.

Gosh, how poetic!

I've ordered the film from HMV, cheapest I could find at £12.99

IMHO,Swaledale is the most beautiful of the Yorkshire Dales - methinks it nature created it to inpsire RVW.

Indeed it is. It even has a regal representative...Queen Doreen of Keld.

I think most artists take inspiration from nature. Of all the English composers RVW has the most intrinsic connection to our verdant landscape.
It's quite uncanny.
Take a walk along Nine Standards Rigg with the Fifth Symphony on your iPod....no Oscar winning composer could marry music and nature more appropriately.

I have done the Coast to Coast walk three times,so they are all familiar places. Queen Doreen has retired from Butt House and I believe she is living with her husband in Muker.

Doreen and Ernest are renting in Keld, with hopes to look for a permanent base. Butt House will open as a B&B in March. I never stopped there myself, but on the Sherpa/Coast to Coast website, she is of legendary status.
