Default Death Of The BBC Drama Village.

It appears that the BBC are serious about killing off their new Drama Village in Birmingham. What with the moving of Dalziel & Pascoe and Doctors, and also Afternoon Play and nothing planned for production there. The whole lot is moving to Manchester. I do recall that when it opened it was going to be the BBC's Pinewood! Radio 2 has already moved its overnight programmes out of Brum.

Wasn't that meant to be part of the big plan of moving much of Broadcasting House & TV Centre from London to the back of beyond - sorry, to the Midlands?

It's only our money, forcibly extracted from us every year, to waste in any way they see fit - so, what does it matter?

(Did that sound cynical enough?)

And this move to the suburbs of London (like Birmingham) is meant to save money because they don't get so much of a grant.

But like most schemes to save money, it'll cost a fortune

Dame Starry, in Birmingham we produced some good stuff, and found a lot of work for local actors, myself included. This move up to Manchester is part of a move by the BBC out of London. Now, I am not against that, as already a major part of BBC output is being moved into the Manchester area. What I am against, is the amount of money they have spent on Birmingham Drama Village, and indeed The Mailbox Studios, which was all set to be a very large central production unit. It appears that money doesn't mean anything, and that minds are changed on a whim. Experienced production staff will either have to move up to Manchester or lose their livelyhood. As you so rightly say "Its only our money".
