Default Anyone remember The Goodies here?

Growing up in Australia we had a constant diet of this show in the afternoons and evenings, but amazingly I'm told it is rarely repeated in the UK? Seems a bit daft!

My favourite episode is the one where Graeme is breeding dogs for Crufts - I almost died of laughter when I first saw this as a kid. The one with the giant Dougal from Magic Roundabout is also a corker, the same episode where there's a parody of The Beatles called 'The Bootles'. Hilarious.

Still recalled fondly, especially 'Kitten Kong'!

I actually thought it was funny at the time, whilst Monty Python was rubbish.

But then I didn't like Led Zeppelin much either..........

What did I know.........

We had Tim and Graeme at our Silent Comedy festival again last weekend...they presented a show at St George's Hall, showing a mixture of Keaton shorts and their own silent comedy-based archive material. Sold out a couple of weeks before, it's the only silent film event I've been to which had ticket touts outside....

Bit of a Bay Window, what??

I've been showing this show to my kids - age 4 and 7 - recently and they've really enjoyed it. Even though the 70's references go right over their heads - there are a lot of jokes that rely on you knowing who minor TV celebrities are, for example.

Some of the sexual refs, and the race ones too, are a bit uncomfortable now - a reminder that this was an adult show that appealed to kids and not the other way round. And that time has moved on.

We have both the double DVD releases and even on these cherry picked selections there are a couple of poor episodes. The recently repeated winter olympics episode was really terrible!

When they were firing on all cylindars they were great - but they often misfired. As with a lot of shows of that era there seemed to be a lot of freedom but very little quality control.

Still, if you were growing up at the time you loved them. And that's the point of them now.

I was a walk-on in one episode - a squad of policemen in the back of a transit bursting out to arrest one or more goodies. I received more repeat cheques from that small appearance than from any other TV I was in either as a walk-on or as a contract artiste. So, it must have had a fair run of repeats in the uk.

I asked him to look at the body. That's who he is.

Default Books

There was also a very successful series of Goodies books:-
The Goodies File
The Goodies' Book of (Criminal) Records and
The Making of the Goodies Disaster Movie.
I still have them all and they are very amusing. The Disaster Movie book has the lyrics of "White Christmas" mistaken for the cast list:-
Emma Dreaming
Arthur White
Chris Muss
Jess Likedee
Juan Swee
Hugo Snow
Mayor Dazeby
Marie Anne Bright
Ann-May Hall-York-Rhys
Mrs B White

Default The Goodies

The Goodies were an absolute scream and it is a damn disgrace the way the BBC (the Bashed Bun Company) have treated this show

According to Wikipedia .... yes!

"On 24 March1975 Alex Mitchell, a 50-year-old bricklayer from King's Lynn literally died laughing while watching an episode of The Goodies. According to his wife, who was a witness, Mitchell was unable to stop laughing whilst watching a sketch in the episode "Kung Fu Kapers" in which Tim Brooke-Taylor, dressed as a kilted Scotsman, used a set of bagpipes to defend himself from a black pudding-wielding Bill Oddie (master of the ancient Lancastrian martial art "Ecky-Thump") in a demonstration of the Scottish martial art of "Hoots-Toot-ochaye." After twenty-five minutes of continuous laughter Mitchell finally slumped on the sofa and expired from heart failure. His widow later sent the Goodies a letter thanking them for making Mitchell's final moments so pleasant"

The chaps themselves mention this incident in one of the DVD commentaries. I wonder how they feel about it?
On the other hand, everyone's got to go sometime, and I can't think of happier circumstances !
