Great poll

Maybe we should start a bookies market on which series will be the eventual winner.

I'll have ten quid each way...........

Dave.

Although it is very difficult to list all of the popular British sitcoms I'm really surprised that Absolute Power didn't make it into any one of the ten pots.

Dave.
If you're going to ask that, what about ...
Agony
Faith in the Future
A Fine Romance
The Good Life
The High Life
Hippies
How Do You Want Me?
In Loving Memory
Keep It in the Family
Kiss Me Kate
The League of Gentlemen
May to December
Spaced
The Young Ones

And probably many others.

Any list like this is bound to be subjective to some degree.
I'm not saying that I particularly like all the ones I've just listed, but I believe they were all quite popular

A comedy drama, surely?
As are many that clock in over 30 minutes, but under 1hr, and add a dash of pathos. The Royle Family, latter Only Fools, Phoenix Nights etc.

For me a comedy drama can run for over an hour whereas as a sitcom starts to struggle after say 45 minutes. A couple of the Only Fools specials were successful (Hull and Jolly Boys) but many were just tired and bloated.

Are you sure you're not thinking of Goodnight Sweatshirt, Steve?

I thought I knew what a sitcom was but now I'm not so sure. Mind you, it doesn't take much to confuse me......

It was just a quick scan through the list, comparing that with a search for UK sitcoms on the IMDb. I'm not surprised that there are some that are actually in the list

Oh sure, but it's still a strange one to be included as a 'sit-com', as I don't think it was ever conceived or considered as anything other than a comedy drama.

It's just my opinion that Common As Muck as a programme is somewhat out of place in a poll of sit-coms (though I adore the series itself)

The British Sitcom Guide defines 'sitcom' thus:

“A humorous radio or television series featuring the reactions of a regular cast of characters to unusual situations, such as misunderstandings or embarrassing coincidences; a sitcom.”

Billy Liar might have had a few votes if it had been included. I imagine it was fairly successful, since it managed to get more than one series.

George and the Dragon, with Sid James, Peggy Mount and John Le Mes plus Two in Clover with Sid and Victor Spinetti would also have a vote from me - Yes, I voted for the Dustbinmen!
