Cheers Marky B, will give it my best shot.

Husband goes home late to his wife, wife asks him where he has been. He replies he's been in the King's Arms.
"That's OK", shes says, "so long as you haven't been to the pub".

I'll get my coat

For those of us that appreciate what the countryside has to offer it's not at all tedious and Julia is a great presenter for it.

Wouldn't ever catch me trying to do that!!
But what do they do when they get up there? There's no cafes or a McDonalds, or even a souvenir shop! Much more fun tearing around the Lake District in a huge 4WD with a jet-ski in tow! Or tearing around the B-Roads on a Yamaha R1 racing your mates to the nearest pub!

That's exactly why people go there - just because there aren't any McDonalds or souvenir shops

But that's just so un-British. Just about every beauty spot/local monument/museum/castle/stately home in the country has to have the extortionate British Rail quality type tea-room selling weak lukewarm tea with UHT milk sachets, and insubstantial food like trendy tasteless flapjacks, factory finished fruitcake at £2.50 per painfully thin slice, and a shop where you can buy overpriced leather bookmarks and furry things to fit on the end of pencils, plus a host of other assorted tat that is totally unrelated to the beauty spot/local monument/museum/castle/stately home which children mither their parents for until they give in and pay out their precious folding for such items which will soon be discarded/lost/broken until the next time they visit somewhere and have to do it all over again!

It's virtually impossible to leave such places of interest to nature's devices, there has to be something tangible there before people will visit it, like a noticeboard explaining the flora and birdlife of the area and a big "You Are Here" map, or rustic woodcut signposts, log cabin toilets, themed litter bins, picnic tables encrusted with bird shit etc. Anywhere unpolluted with humanity just isn't the real deal for most families "We can't possibly stop here, there's just no evidence of man's existence, not even a licenced bandit in an ice cream van!"

You have a point there,Sam! A few years ago I took my dad to Cragside in Northumberland (we are both National Trust members,so we both got in for nothing). Whilst I would recommend a visit (not only to the house, but also the gardens),I would also suggest to take advantage of the different picnic spots and take your own food and drink.

Call me Mr Tightfisted but whenever we go out for the day we always take our own food and drink. For one thing it tastes better, the tea especially, and for another the convenience of having your picnic whenver and wherever it suits you is priceless!

Money is generally tight for most families in the UK, and so I'm astonished at the amount of money some people spend on refreshments at motorway service stations and tea-rooms in zoos, theme parks and other family attractions. Perhaps in excess of £20 to £30 for parents and two kids to have a disappointing and insubstantial snack!

It only takes twenty minutes or so to prepare a decent picnic, so if people plan to go out for the day surely a bit of preparation beforehand will not only save them money but it will be so much more enjoyable! The money saved would go a long way to contribute to many more family days out in the future!
