Money is generally tight for most families in the UK, and so I'm astonished at the amount of money some people spend on refreshments at motorway service stations and tea-rooms in zoos, theme parks and other family attractions. Perhaps in excess of £20 to £30 for parents and two kids to have a disappointing and insubstantial snack!

It only takes twenty minutes or so to prepare a decent picnic, so if people plan to go out for the day surely a bit of preparation beforehand will not only save them money but it will be so much more enjoyable! The money saved would go a long way to contribute to many more family days out in the future!
As long as you are not infringing anything,I agree with you.
If anyone is in the North Yorks. Moor area,I strongly recommend "Lordstones Cafe". It is a delight and reasonably priced.

Glad to see they are building a new cafe at the top of Snowdon. Last time I was there the summit was very disappointing, worn out and ugly. A shame there is no 'Wainwright of North Wales' (or possibly just as well,). It truly is a beautiful place.

There are two ways to get to Lordstones by car. The road between Helmsley and Great Broughton goes through a village called Chopgate (pron. Chopyat) - turn off for a small road to Carlton In Cleveland (mind it is a narrow road) and keep a look out for a road going off to Lordstones car park.
If you approach Carlton In Cleveland from Teesside, take the left fork for Chop Gate and you go up a bank. It is easy to miss the cafe as there are no sign posts for it,and it is not mentioned on an Ordnance Survey map. It lies on the Cleveland Way between Cold Moor and Cringle Moor.
The cafe itself is a converted farm building (or may have been built from scratch),with a roof made of grass and other plants. It blends nicely into background. The food is great and reasonably priced,it is also licensed (two years ago,a pint of John Smith's Smooth was only a £1 a pint - more than likely it will be more now) and it is a godsend for walkers.
The car park is large, but at weekends and Bank Holiday Mondays it will be busy. Obviously, the proprietor does not like people drinking and eating their own stuff within the vicinity of the cafe (it has outside tables),but there are picnic areas nearby.
They even supply free water to hikers, not like many other places where you have to buy bottled water.
You can't see it coming down from Cold Moor.
When I did the C2C in 2003,there were two Canadian girls doing it as well and they were bowled over by it.
Obviously,I am not expecting everyone to come to the norht east solely for this, but if you are in the area and would like refreshments,Lordstones Cafe won't fail you.

Does than sound familiar,Bats?

We went over to Swanage today, the place retired dentists go to die! Starting out at Sandbanks by nearly new second hand E-Bay push bikes, across on the chain ferry to Studland, and narrowly avoiding death by swarms of OAPs in Honda Jazz cars and Hymer motor caravans on the B road, and then down into sunny Swanage. Picnic on the sea front, a stroll round the tacky souvenir shops (my favourite pastime in seaside towns) and back to Sandbanks again, pleasantly knackered! Then I remembered that its FA Cup semi-final day and I missed the live Pompey game on the BBC!

I think this is the 4/4 series which was on last month. On tomorrow, Friday 23rd May

Wainwright's Walks - 19:00

Scafell Pike

Julia Bradbury explores the work of the great British fell walker and author, Alfred Wainwright. Julia faces the ultimate Wainwright challenge - Scafell Pike, England's highest peak. Before tackling the 3,000ft ascent, she seeks advice from celebrated fell-runner and local sheep farmer, Jos Naylor. Then it's just a case of getting herself and her film crew to the roof of England before darkness falls.

BBC2 : (30 mins)

I've noticed that a few times she gets to the top just in time to see the nice sunset - but how does she then get down again?

Does she (& the film crew) camp for the night? Or do they get a helicopter to pick them up? Or do they come down in the dark?

It's something I have wondered to, between you and me Steve I think they phone Fell, pretend it's Jenny, say they're lost, and before the phone is put down he's there with his faithful sheepdog Frith. And being the gentleman that he is he hides his disappointment and guides them down the muddiest part of the route.

Don't tell anyone,Freddy - but I am up there waiting for Julia and her crew. There is a bivouac for the crew and a nice tent and large sleeping bag for Julia to snuggle up to me in,sharing a flask of hot soup and hip flask of brandy.

Muddiest! They'd get taken down Piers Gill and left there if coming off the Pike!

All the best

Word on The Path is that Julia Bradbury is doing Wainwright's Coast to Coast Walk. Filming starts in September. So if I disappear for two weeks in September....well,she will need someone to guide her.

If it is true,I don't think her schedule will be made known or there will be an army of walkers trying to get their 15 minutes of fame.

Sounds worth waiting for!

By the by, how many series of W's Walks have there been? I'm thinking of buying the DVD set but I think that only has two volumes - and I was sure there had been three series? I could be completely clueless, of course! (Probably)
