Smile Wainwright's Walks

Wainwright's Walks started again with Julia Bradbury climbing Helvellyn, along the route of the notorious Striding Edge. Apart from the start of the walk at Patterdale,I started at Glenridding, but more or less followed the same path. Certainly after the "Hole In the Wall",it all came back to me crossing Striding Edge and down the crag, where you had to come down like coming down from a ladder (I know I had suffered from "cragfast" before my descent,as I didn't want to go back across Striding Edge,or go down the crag).
Fortunately, the weather was kinder for me (the conditions were horrid for the programme),but alas my memory wasn't as I forgot to check there was any film in my camera - there wasn't.
I also remember having my lunch behind the cross like shelter at the summit.
Alas the ridge has claimed many lives in the past, two just this winter alone, but those with a passion for walking,it is a must to do - a recommendation for all members on this forum.
No doubt Fell has done it.

I watched it via iPlayer, and with these sort of shows I think the presenter needs to have character, eccentricity or an obvious love of the subject. Julia Bradbury is cute, cute but bland/lightweight.

I disagree,I think she is ideal for the show.

Like Marky B I enjoyed it, the lakes look beautiful most of the time and as for JB she doesn't sensationalise, just gets on with it. Having a local also helps. Makes me want to do the walks.

regards

Enjoy!
The stars of the show are Wainwright and the Lakes, and Julia Bradbury complements that with no showiness,or eccentricity. I think she was probably daunted by the climb ahead (and it is daunting) and the weather that hindered it.

Catching up after few days away!

Yes, Fell has been up there many times.

Here's a photo looking westwards to the summit:

The summit is just to the right of the pointy top.

Second photo is looking back to the awkward chimney - it's great to walk straight along the top but, as you can see, there is an easier alternative just below the edge itself:

She may have been a bit daunted by that but it didn't stop her doing this - that's Julia in blue!

Wouldn't ever catch me trying to do that!!

All the best

Yep,I'm with you on that last message,Fell. Great photos - mind,I didn't know there was an alternative to the chimney (I was always thought that was called Bad Step).

There are probably a few "Bad Steps" in Lakeland. The best known, and hardest obstruction for a walker, is the one on Crinkle Crags - the series of steps on the right of the photo:

One used to be able to crawl under the chockstones that fill the gully - I remember going under them in 1989 but it is now completely blocked.

All the best

I know Robin Hood's Chair by Ennerdale Water nearly became a "bad step" for me. I should have walked along the north shore to Black Sail Hut.

Just got the two DVD's of series 1 & 2. I'll do a little bit of housework and then I'll go walking with Julia this afternoon - only in my mind alas.
