Glenister and Crook to star in ITV vampire drama

Philip Glenister is to play a vampire slayer in a modern-day version of Bram Stoker’s Dracula set in London.

The Life on Mars actor will take the role of Rupert Galvin in the six-part series, currently labelled the “untitled Van Helsing project” by ITV, which will also star Mackenzie Crook as a vampire and Holliday Grainger.

Glenister’s character is described as a “larger than life American” who has a “zero tolerance to the rabble of mythical half-life entities that exist all around us”.

The story will focus on his relationship with his godson Luke, played by Christian Cooke, who is the last descendent of the Van Helsing line.

It is being made for ITV1 by Shine, the company founded by Elisabeth Murdoch, which has produced shows including Sugar Rush and Sinchronicity.

Sounds like a silly send-up to me ...

How could anyone take MacKenzie Crook seriously in anything ? The minute you see him, you smile !

Hrrummph! They can think about producing this dreadful sounding project but couldn't sort out a second series of the brilliant Ultraviolet.

ps - what happened to that 'new' Hammer film about vampires at a rave, they sounded quite good

pps - when I first saw the thread title I thought of Steve Crook (how sad is that?)

The one Vampire series where they didn't turn into bats...!!
I agree, it was excellent and underrated....but the truth of the matter was that Joe Ahearne had said what he wanted to say, so called a halt. I'd rather that, than a hack writer take it on and wreck the concept. Susannah Harker....fabulous. Just wonder what she would have achieved if Hitch was still around. Just his type....

Cheers penfold ... I assumed they just dropped it. Did you know they tried a US version, Idris Elba was in that one too. The series wasn't commissioned and the pilot never aired. It would be interesting to see it.

According to a report on IMDB from someone who saw the US pilot, and from one of its makers, we were mercifully spared.....

Sorry I missed this post earlier - I agree that ULTRAVIOLET was a great series and I don't want to see it continued by some other team. The first and fifth episodes were standouts and the final scene in episode six was very dark, very depressing, and bloody brilliant!!!
