Default Television drama enthusiasts: your help is needed!

Hello everyone,

I am commencing upon a research project, generally dealing with Georgian-Victorian-London-set crime drama (a mouthful).

Basically, I need to find lots of examples of television drama within this genre, and I'm having a bit of trouble. Which is why I came here - if any of you lovely people have any favourites/suggestions I would really, really appreciate you replying to this!

As for some examples I have found: "City of Vice", "Jack the Ripper", "Murder Rooms...", "Fingersmith", "Oliver Twist", "Sweeney Todd", "Sherlock Holmes", "Cribb", etc. (but not much else!)

As you can see, my list is sparse to say the least, so, again, absolutely any help you could give me would make me big-time happy

Thanking you all in anticipation and desperation (!)

Yep, both of those look good. Any idea about availability on tape/dvd/online?

Cheers

Raffles certainly is and very good it is too with excellent use of gay subtext (if that's your sort of thing). It gets repeated on ITV3 occasionally as well.

I have happy memories of this one from the 60s:

Is it just fiction or does true crime drama count - there must be quite a lot of that. Eg A question of guilt, and at least one of the Ladykillers (Miss Madeleine Smith) and The poisoning of Charles Bravo. There was also that series in which Frank Windsor and Stratford Johns (in their Softly Softly personae) solved Jack the Ripper. And more recently there was the Baker Street Irregulars.

Cribb is still the best Victorian detective on the telly.

How about The Blackheath Poisonings, it was repeated on ITV 3 a couple of months ago, don't know if available on dvd though.

Better than Sherlock?

I've been struggling to find a TV play from the early 80s in which Ronald Pickup starred as a Victorian sleuth and Robert Lang was the copper. I've checked them both out on IMDB and can't track it down. Pity, I remember it had class.

Cheers guys - I haven't heard of a lot of these, so good stuff! The Blackheath Poisonings is available on region 1 dvd, as far as I can tell. And The Baker Street Irregulars is on region 2 dvd. Thanks!

CaptainWaggett: yep, I'm looking at both fiction and true crime.

Any ideas where I can get some of these dramas that are unavailable? I'm guessing Cork is near-impossible!

Hi Marvelman,
Don't know if this is of any interest, but there's a box set of " Julian Fellowes
Investigates" on Amazon, it has an episode about the Balham Poisoning ( the Bravo case) on it ,also the Croyden Poisoning, but I think that may be a bit late for you as it's 1920's.

Rogue's Gallery was based around Newgate Gaol in the 18th century. Probably impossible to get a copy. PIty: I have happy memories of it.

Thanks for the help people!

apricot: cheers, I completely forgot about this series - and it's only £7 on Amazon, so it may be worth it for the Bravo case episode.

ProfMarcus: checked out 'Rogue's Gallery', which sounds like it would have been perfect, but yep - no idea how I'd get a copy :-( Thanks anyway

(If anyone has any other suggestions, please feel free to continue!)

how about 'the life and crimes of william palmer' starring keith allen from 1998-gets repeated on ITV3 sometimes and is availabe on region1 dvd from amazon, as mentioned above-the julian fellowes investigates series has 2 episodes set in the period you are looking for 'the case of charles bravo' set in 1876(i think) and 'the case of rose hargent' set in 1901 if that's any help?
