Default Public Eye

I must admit this has completely slipped off my radar screen until I saw other people elsewhere in the forum talking about it. This series appears to be forgotten about which is a great shame as it's pretty good following the adventures of Frank Marker as played by the fantastic Alfred Burke. Sure some of the episodes are a bit hit and miss but overall it's pretty good and a damn sight better than the crap that gets shown on TV. It's a shame the earlier series and episodes have been completely lost. It makes my blood boil but there we are. At least we have the 1969 series and 1971. I only hope Network realises there is a market for this great series and release the others on DVD. Here's hoping...

If you go to Chertsey station, you can still see the portakabin that Marker used as his office in the last series.

I absolutely love this series, Alfred Burke shines.

The two hander episode with Paul Rogers, The Man Who Said Sorry, showed just how deep these characterisation and writing could go in the 70's. I hope Network complete the set.

a great, gritty series with a main character that is not particularly likeable!

I remember him being in Chertsey Station forecourt and also being in Eton High Street, but can't recall if he was anywhere else.
Anyone?

Anyone?
London, Birmingham, then on to Brighton, Windsor and Chertsey.

Wonderful series, are any of the remaining three B&W episodes (The Morning Wasn't So Hot, Works with Chess, Not with Life and The Bromsgrove Venus) being added to the DVD sets I wonder?

I haven't checked the actual discs, but there are no extras listed on the box of the new set.

Why not likeable ? I always thought Marker had quite a strong moral streak within him, tempered (of course) by the type of work that he did, but most of us make compromises to earn a living...

Yes, I agree, it was the kind of moral sense that comes from strength of characterisation and good writing - he was often careworn and quite unfeeling but his logic for being so was impeccable, based on the nature of his work. Over the course of the last two series his decline was painful to watch - you could see it wearing him down week after week rather than it just being written into him.

Burke's on-going characterisation of Marker is one of the great chapters of British television.

Just wanted to say Thanks, Shadwell. The two box sets had been gathering dust on my shelves for years and you reminded me to watch them again. I've just watched "The Man Who Didn't Like Sweets" with Peter Sallis as the multiple bigamist. Magic!

My absolute favourite (not on DVD yet, I bootlegged it off the box long ago - naughty!) is "What's To Become Of Us" with John Woodnutt as the charming, fantasising lollip

. . . and new thumbscrews for me . . .
