I've just started watching some early episodes of Van der Valk, which are very much better than I'd expected. One silly thing intrigues me: Commisaris van der Valk (the excellent Barry Foster) is clearly a bit of a lush - he doesn't miss any opportunity for a quick genever or beer, even when he should be out sleuthing. He finds bottles of beer in various places in his office and knocks them back with relish - warm, or at least room temperature.
What kind of Dutch beer is he drinking? I only know lagers like Heineken which, as far as I can recall from hippy days visiting the brewery in Amsterdam, were served cold. I've sometimes had beers served at room temperature in Germany... but not in the Netherlands. Any beer connoisseurs out there who can enlighten me? ![]() I'm just popping out for a cold Heineken... The Cloggies have a great tradition, a 'Koppstart'. A slug of Jonge Genever followed by an ice cold Amstel or Heine....................
![]() Never drank warm beer in Cloogieland ever.............. ![]()

I've often drunk beer that's at room temperature, or a cellar temperature which is slightly below room temperature Most lagers have to be drunk ice cold so that they freeze your taste buds. Otherwise you'd realise that they have no taste and you may as well be drinking iced water ![]() Steve |

I have had some of this. It is amazing stuff. Review from beeradvice.com ... "Without a doubt this would have to be one of the best tasting beers I have ever had the pleasure of drinking. This beer is unlike any I have tried before and is actually classed as a fruit beer for reasons I will soon explain. It is created with the addition of two important and unique ingredients, ripened Morello cherries and elderberry juice. It is then left to mature in oak casks, where the ageing process can last for 2-3 years before the beer is ready for drinking. The result of all this is a truly beautiful tasting fruit beer with a distinct tartness. Not only is the taste of this beer unique but so is its appearance. It has a cherry colour look and a pleasant fruity smell" ![]()

I had a few Krieks last summer in the Dutch pub De Hems in the West End. Lovely stuff. Thankfully my nearest Wetherspoons has started selling the similar Fruli which is strawberry flavoured and a mix of proper Belgian beer and fruit juice. Well, you've got to get those 5 a day somehow... |

Bellevue Kriek, is, of course, Belgian. But the Belgian beer tradition is also much in evidence in The Netherlands. And the Dutch have their own excellent beers too. There are dark lagers, called boks, which can happily be drunk at room temperature, and lots of lovely amber beers that are fine drunk 'warm'. And these latter are proper beers too (top fermented and often bottle conditioned) not lagers (bottom fermented). The Netherlands is a wonderful place for beer and jenever tourism. There are hundreds of Belgian and Dutch jenevers to be enjoyed.

I think that the Red Light district must be where you can get Red Amstel beer - which Commisaris van der Valk seems to prefer. He orders in a pub in another episode - unfortunately they don't stock it so he settles for a lager and gin.
