That looks like a good beard to me; I've seen much less convincing specimens pass muster.

I think the show was good viewing, but my view is it was fictional. The show like the C4 documentry just highlights on parts of their lives, not in autobiography form.If they really hated one another and the shows they wouldn't have done 8 series,2 films,2 tours and a comercial.Ok they were typecast but they did other stuff also.
Corbett may have been a classical actor, but I don't think he would have become a Finney,he had comic features.
Bramble was gay but not a villian or odd like the play portrayed.Homosexuality was illegal in the 60's,so if you were a gay you had to hide it.I remember him on This Is Your Live for some person,he came on camp with a handbag!

I didn't watch the play so the fact that I agree with you is irrelevant.

I totally agree that if they even disliked each other never mind hated each other, why would they agree to do all that work together??? Fair enough the series for the cash, but tours and a commercial???????

And if they did hate each other then they needed an award as big as thier cart for their performances if they were grinning and bareing it! I can`t imagine anyone being THAT talented! Fair enough the characters couldnt stand each other (debatable of course, there were also soft, sentimental moments!) but the actors had to work closely to pull thier performance off!

Unfortunately Rach B's link doesn't seem to be working.

Fortunately, Mariocki posted the same piece the other day.

Thanks Rach B, and welcome.

Good link and a predictable but good response from the Corbett family. The puzzling thing is that if the play was so inaccurate and enhanced to increase its dramatic effect, what was the point of basing it on real life people? You may as well just write a play about two fictitious characters and be done with it.

Cynical person that I am, this all smacks of selling nostalgia, familiarity and celebrity tittle-tattle to the gullible viewers who will watch because it's about legends from their childhood/early adult years. Unfortunately with the BBC kitemark of kwality we were brought up to rely on now sadly lacking, the credibility of such offerings is very questionable indeed!

Why didn't they do one about another legendary comedy sitcom team in Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads? Is it because the main actors are still with us?

Quite possibly. Note that all the leading people portrayed in this series are dead and so can't sue.

And they do seem to be struggling hard to make this series show that all comics and comic actors really have tragic lives behind their projected persona. At least that's the angle that the interminable ads for the series are pushing.

They had to make up a lot of it with Steptoe. With Hancock it's in the "bleedin' obvious" category and they didn't really tell us anything new. Who's next, Hughie Green?
