not that it made TV, but Peter Watkins 'the war game' gave me nightmares for 3 days and that was in my early twenties. By the time I got to see it, B&W was waaay out of fashion, but it still rang true. Far better than the US equivalents I felt.

the (original) cybermen and daleks probably rank #1 for most people.

'the ruling classes' and 'if' both had pretty upsetting effect on me. and nosferatu (again, the original not the Klaus Kinski remake, good though it was) was very very chilling.

What we may call B-Films of the 1950s - 1960s like the doom of traveling into space
and the effects of bomb tests (THEM) (IT) was very scary to a formulating mind.
One news story at the time that frightened me was the contamination of milk and the grass eaten by cows. (It still does)

Default hide behind the sofa ...

...My all time scarey moment is the 'Black Nun' in the rocking chair from Armchair Thriller - 'Quiet As A Nun'. (1977)

No. 2 - Hammer House of Horror (1980): Two Faces Of Evil - the guy with the 'claw' fingernail...

No. 3 - Threads (1983) - because it can happen...

No. 4 - The Omega Factor (1979) - one episode about witchcraft and a missing girl in a haunted house...

No. 5 - Doctor Who (1975): The Ark In Space - this was the first programme I watched at home in colour (!!) well, I was only 5 at the time...

Quatermass and the Pit! I was about 7 when this was shown and it scared the crap out of me. Didn't stop me watching it but did give me nightmares.

It's been mentioned before on another thread but the troll and the big fish in The Singing Ringing Tree were between them just about enough to screw you up for the rest of your life.
My brother was deeply upset by Kenneth Williams having his leg cut off in Carry On Jack.
Finally I was terrified of the staring open mouthed alien on the end credits of the original Star Trek.

I remember as i was 10 years old, my dad sitting me down to watch the World at War episode where they nuke Japan. Cheers Dad!

After that for years if i heard a band in the distance id wonder if somewhere like Manchester or Liverpool had been nuked, and wondered how long it would take the nuclear whirlwind to reach us. (A tense few minutes to say the least)
