We never hid behind the sofa in our house. It's not that we were particularly tough, but the sofa was against the wall and it was too hard to move it with people sitting on it

This "hiding behind the sofa" always seemed a particularly strange expression to me and my siblings

I certainly remember 'hiding behind the Sofa'!.........and I did, coz of the Daleks!

(they always seemed more scary in Black & White), don't recall hiding from the Cybermen though, guess I'd matured a little when they were first shown on Dr. Who!

Another thing which I remember being very upsetting was a piece on Nationwide when I was little which had some gruesome effects ( severed heads impaled on a tree).Might have been a piece about werewolves but Nationwide did several scary sequences. I didn't hide behind the sofa but I did leave the room,
It was quite a controversial item I seem to remember at the time..does anyone remember it.

i think that was one of their april fool jokes ,they did a spoof one year about a mad scientist bringing dinosaurs back to life [ way before jurassic park ] and it had me terrified for days on end ,the monster they showed was very realistic must have blown that years dr who special effects budget in about 5 seconds of footage

An abiding memory for me is one Saturday night getting called down from bed by the babysitter to watch a nice little film called "Psycho". Cheers babe !

Ah Yes, the Soviet Union. All them wheatfields and ballet in the evenings

I remember that one too but I was really into dinosaurs so it didn't bothr me that much. The one I found terrifying was a medieval/werewolf thing IIRC

I remember the public information film on what to do when the bomb goes off and how to protect yourself from the radioactive fallout. I was really small and remembering thinking that the world was going to end. That must of scared the hell out of a lot of kids.

Live each day to the full because one day it will be your last.

It did. I expect many people of my generation are surprised/amazed that most of us are still alive

See the Protect and Survive website or public information films like Action After Warnings

It'd take a lot more than a sofa to protect you

i remember those too ,voiced by patrick allen ,the scariest thing was deep down you knew putting old blankets up at the windows ,hiding under an orange crate and leaving a note out cancelling the milk was pointless anyway in the face of a nuclear bomb

does anyone remember an act which used to turn up on things like the two ronnies in the late 70s ,where a mad professer type guy was assembling a monster ,in the end the monster ,which must have had a real person in it ,tore the head off the mad professor who must have been some sort of robot/ puppet although youd have thought he was real till then ? used to be a segment on various saturday night variety type shows ,does anyone have a copy of it ?
