The Curse of Three of a Kind - David Copperfield takes to the bottle when his fellow comedians careers take off and his crash-lands.

The Paul Squire Story - ITV's new face of comedy is little seen after being hailed as the future of British comedy by Ernie Wise.

The Lennie and Jerry Story - Jerry Stevens ponders the unfairness of showbiz when he sees his former partner scale the heights of international stardom in Lucky Ladders.

Thats the joke that killed the Music Hall !

flipping heck ! i remember paul squires ! also lenny and jerry being trumpeted as the new morecambe and wise ,in their dreams perhaps ,if you take the title " curse of comedy " literally ,then french and saunders could be a good subject for what theyve inflicted on the viewer over the years ,or that man with the glasses who writes the vicar of dibley and comes up with those hugh grant , umm err , type films ,

Thanks for that - lovely article from two who really know. A great counterbalance to the rubbish being spread around...

The article doesn't really contradict the plays though - as G and S say, they weren't around for the period that the Hancock play covered. It's hard to deny that he ended a tragic figure however much fun he was to be around in the 1950s. And the Steptoe one didn't actually portray Corbett and Brambell as hating each other though lazy journos chose to report it as doing so.

My main problem about the series was the stupid title but what should they have called it? 'A few light entertainment stars whose private lives weren't entirely conventional'?

What about:

"Gaining enjoyment from the unhappiness of other people"

I could tell that this would be the tone of the series, which is why I didn't watch it.
