I liked all the theme music from the ITC adventures series, also Barry Gray's music for Thunderbirds etc,and not forgetting Laurie Johnson's music for The Avengers. Does anyone agree with me that today's tv theme tunes - on the whole - are not as memorable?

Also does anyone know if the very slow version of The Saint theme - on the early series episodes still exist, as the version used on the DVD Box Set appears to be speeded up - even though it is still slower that the later theme (colour episodes) I can remember this very slow version on telly during the mid 1970's. and I think I still have a cassette copy somewhere recorded from the TV .

Hope the above question makes sense -

Oh yes What about the superb Danger Man main theme - so many slightly different versions for this - there all good.

It's hard to compare when you only hear the theme for, say Cranford, 5 times but the Avengers theme 20 times a year. I loved the music for Lark Rise to Candleford but I think it's true to say that people are less patient with long title sequences nowadays and would just fastforward through something like the Persuaders titles. So less time and money is spent on titles now (even the Doctor Who title sequence is shorter)

The Protectors (Avenues and Alleyways) Theme Song
Sorry Jackdaw but Tony Christie's Protectors rendition (and the song itself) makes me cringe.

I agree with you about The Persuaders and The Baron. The Baron titles visuals (love the hard-driven Jensen) married to MIAS music - now that would get my vote.

Cyril Stapleton's Department S.
As a theme tune, it had everything, as a series it simply wasn't up to the mark, when compared to MIAS, Dangerman and of course The Saint.

I am still trying to track down a clip of the harpsichord theme .... surprisingly elusive!

Hi Alan, I don't like Avenues and Alleyways per se, just the verse, and although he's a bit dramatic here, I've always had a great admiration for One-take Christie.
The man had the lot as a singer, and had he taken a different route with regard to material and image etc, he could have been a very big star, particularly in America.

By the way, as I type this I see your smiley looking down at me pitilessly, so i don't think I'll be able to convert you.

Cyril Stapleton only did the version of Department S which was available on record. It was written by Edwin Astley.

What I find odd is how such a dreadful programme as The Adventurer got such a suberb theme tune.

Danger Man harpsichord theme and some of the score from various episodes is avalable on a CD which also features The Saint. I got mine from Amazon.
