One I remember is Lizzie Dripping, which was about two city children, in war- time Britain, who were evacuated to the countryside . There was a character in it called Mrs Gotobed, who lived in a place called Druids Bottom. I remember Lizzie's younger brother was always chanting "Go to bed on Druids Bottom".

Isn't Mrs Gotobed from Carrie's War which was about the same time? Or did that just use the same joke? I remember being completely amazed when Lizzie Dripping turned up as a Blue Peter presenter and revealed she'd been 20ish when she'd done the show but I suspect anyone over the age of 12 wouldn't have been fooled for a second

I believe you are correct, Captain. It's been so long since I saw either of these, that I got them mixed up....sorry.

I think this is the one you mean Mark .... it was called The Machine Gunners.

'The Machine Gunners' told the tale of a group of wartime teenagers and their adventures with, yes you've guessed it, a machine gun! As a young lad, I enjoyed the making camps, firing guns, fighting, soldiers and warplanes elements that the title suggested. However, the programme had far greater depths, and tackled such diverse topics as bullying, bereavement, disability, camaraderie and teenage angst, set against a backdrop of WWII Newcastle.

I recently watched it again via the BBC archive but sadly they only showed one episode. Very effective but I'm not sure it would hold the attention of today's kids.

Over the past year I have watched several 'kids' series (Sky,Owl Service, Children of the Stones) and had the same thought. The are well written and intelligent series but do not have the 'in your face' style of many 'kids' shows today. Mind you, that goes for some 'grown up' series as well.

If people gave kids a chance they might find that they have a longer attention span, and more interest in unusual things, than most makers of TV programmes give them credit for

There are also more modern ones that have quite complex and challenging plot lines, like Press Gang and the more recent Skins to name but two.
