I'd recommend 'Minder' which ran from 1979 to 1994 on ITV. Every episode which was broadcast is now available on DVD.

I really enjoyed:

To Serve Them All My Days.
Poldark.
The Stars Look Down.
Sam.
A Pin To See The Peepshow.
When The Boat Comes In.
Holding On.

It seems a shame to me, programme makers don't think we have the attention span to follow something for 6 or so weeks, it's mainly feature length or over 2 nights, I like having a serial to folow that's going to have an ending!
