Does anyone recall a play/musical? that involved students putting on a show?

It was in the 70's or early 80,s. Chris farlowe played a plumber/electrician

who ends up on stage singing. he was very funny in it . BBC2 i think.

Chris and I grew up in Islington and were born in the same year.
We lived only streets apart and he was born John Dieghton.
When he was singing with the Thunderbirds they were the best band around.
I wonder how he is as I haven't seen him for more than 20 years.

Yep that's the one, thanks dylan.

I,d forgotten the gorgeous Sonja Kristina was in it ( i must be getting old)

I taped a programme about english blues singers 2 years ago maybe & chris was

on there happy as larry singing with albert lee. he looks fine(white hair) & still

sounds terrific!!! By the way aitch was that you i saw in" McVicar" on tv this week?(ABC2)

his cover of 'handbags and gladrags' for immediate is chillingly wonderful. Shame Immediate ripped off almost all of its artists, I wonder if he was one of the unlucky ones?

I saw him in concert with Van Morrison a couple of years ago in Brighton. He came on stage before Van and said "Does anyone remember me?" to an affermative "YES!" He did a great set and some wonderful blues duets with the Man.

Doesn't he run a shop in North London?

He was at number 1 with Out Of Time when England won the FA Cup in 1966. He never had another number 1 hit,and England haven't had any use for Duraglit since.

"Handbags and Gladrags" was written by Mike D'Abo (of Manfred Mann).

I always thought Chris had an 'oldie' record shop in North London but, according to Wikipedia, he is an antique dealer with a showroom in Islington.

I think Chris Farlowe was a Militaria dealer on Upper Street in the late 70's. For some reason the name "Call To Arms" comes to mind. As for Immediate I don't think there were any lucky ones as far as getting paid went, with the possible exception of Andrew Loog Oldham.

Chris Farlowe is still performing on the nostalgia circuit package shows.

I saw Dave Dee of Dave Dee Dozy Beeky Mick and Tich a few weeks ago on one such show and the band were excellent. I think a lot of these old sixties stars have day jobs these days Dave Dee is a businessman and also a Justice of the Peace.
