I'm surprised in the ITVfest of its past fifty years, little has been mentioned of the greatest variety show Sunday Night At The London Palladium. It had many presenters:
Tommy Trinder
Hughie Green
Alfred Marks
Robert Morley
Arthur Haynes
Dickie henderson
Bruce Forsyth
Don Arrol (whatever happened to him?)
Dave Allen
Norman Vaughn
Jimmy Tarbuck
Des O'Connor
Roger Moore
Jim Dael (in the 1970's revamped version)
At its height it boasted the talents of Judy Garland,Bob Hope,Johnny Ray,The Beatles,The Rolling Stones (who famously refused to go on the revolving stage),Petula Clark,Liberace etc. If brought back these days,I doubtthey would get such A list talent of its glory years.

As a kid I was allowed to watch the show up to and including the Beat the Clock bit, then it was bed regardless of who was top of the bill.

I remember just once being called down to watch that puppet rat thing called Topo Gigo. Whatever happened to him ? Was it the same old story of sex, drugs and strong cheese ?

Ah Yes, the Soviet Union. All them wheatfields and ballet in the evenings

It wasn't on in our house because my folks thought it was Butlins cabaret for people who didn't like the seaside!

It's a sorry tale....

Once his hey-day was over he found that all the hangers-on had left him without even a crumb of Double Gloucester...

In the early 70s he was forced to take a job with Rentokil, doing their trade exhibitions until even that petered out.

He was last heard of in a research lab somewhere in the South-East of England, on eight cartons of Rothmans a day.

How the mighty have fallen....

Perhaps it's time for an NFT Retrospective ?

"Sunday Night At The London Palladium" was not just a popular variety show, it was a British institution.
Everyone, but everyone used to watch it every week.
Catchphrases from the show's hosts became popular in everyday speech.
Who can forget Norman Vaughn's -
"Swinging, Dodgy Elsie Tanner"

Dave.

Hmmmm ...... I always thought he was a bit of a one-trick pony. Not very highly regarded in the entertainment industry apparently. Used to swan about backstage in a Noel Coward dressing gown. And absolutely refused to share the bill with any other animated puppets.

Rumoured to have spiked Pinky and Perky's swill with laxative.

No, a nasty piece of work by all accounts.

Never liked that accent. Came across as an Italian pimp.

Not surprised to hear about his attitude Tony, nor the Pinky & Perky spiking. After all, rumours had circulated for years that he had Family connections which got him into the business...

Some of these people were generations apart in the sort of thing us 70s kids were in to. I liked Arthur Haynes because he was a bit different, and Dave Allen was good, Brucie is just great at anything he does but his material was a bit Butlins.

The rest of the people on the list were more my parents' age group, and stuff that we long haired spotty malcontented scowling "blaspheming booted blue jean baby boys" liked; Billy Connolly, Mike Harding, Jasper Carrott, Monty Python, Peter Cook & Dudley Moore, and decent rock and punk bands of course, didn't really get a look in when it came to mainstream variety television, especially on ITV. It seemed that ITV wanted to try and bring a touch of Las Vegas glitz to the small screen, only it was more Bingo than Blackjack, and there were more star guests on the down escalator than there were on the up!

Some of the contemporary artistes of the day weren't much better and invariably they were on ITV regularly as well; Jimmy Cricket, Cannon & Ball, The Comedians, Pam Ayres and would have eventually migrated to the London Paladium show at some point, or its replacement Live From Her Majesty's hosted by Jimmy "Wa Hey" Tarbuck!

But I suppose in those days all you needed was an evening jacket, a bow tie and a catchphrase "Where's me washboard?" to aspire to the heights of Sunday Night At The London Palladium. Nowadays every up-and-coming drama school "comedian" aspires to being a regular on a silly TV quiz like Never Mind the Buz

Never mind what happened to him after Sunday Night At The London Palladium, what happened to him before that?
Did he ever do anything else? The IMDb only has him listed as the host of the Palladium show and that only from 1960-61
