Default Long John Silver

When I was a child this was one of my favourite shows on after school, I never missed seeing the wonderful Robert Newton doing the best Jim me lad ever. liked the Buccanners too with Robert Shaw and Sir Francis Drake.

I remember it as well. It gave Newton plenty of leeway to chew the scenery, not that he ever needed much of an excuse! The series followed Newton's second feature version of Long John, which was filmed in Australia (as was the TV series).
Disney gave him his first shot at the role in 1950. That latter film qualifies as British and is fondly remembered. Probably one of the earliest features that I saw.

Keith Moom used to do a very funny impersonation of Newton as Long John.

I'm pretty certain we've got a thread about Robert Newton and Long John Silver somewhere in the forum, not sure where though, perhaps in Actors & Actresses...?

Of course whenever anyone "impersonates a pirate" and does it with an "Arr, Jim lad" then they're impersonating Newton and his Dorset accent

Yes Donna kebab, I've 12 albums (film related) given to me at Xmas over the years. They all have the inscription 'Love from Mummy and Daddy' and I still 'treasure' them. - Ahhhh!!!!
Other covers include Alan Ladd, John Howard Davies, Errol Flynn, Laurence Olivier, Johnny Mack Brown, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Deborah Kerr, AudreyHepburn/ Mel Ferrer, and Deborah Kerr/Cary Grant. What a feast of wonderful photos and info'.

I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous.

Now you're talking! I spent many enjoyable hours reading the book, and Newton's interpretation was everything you wanted it to be.

I was going to call you 'Donna E Mobile' but I thought too way out - nobody'll get it. As far as Scotland is concerned my only claim to fame is nearly being run down by a plane at Kinloss when the traffic lights didn't work and a photo I took of Loch Ness but unfortunately you didn't appear (joke).

I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous.
