Wink Fred Dineage Mr Southern Television

Fred has to be one of the most likeable anchormen of local tv shows in the history of telly.

I know he has done a lot of network stuff, but whenever I watch Meridiean news when I am on holiday in Bournemouth I always marvel at Fred he is such a pro such a nice guy and not at all irritating.

Compare him to Mr Border tv the uncutous Derek Batey;

Anyone out there met Fred and confirm that he is a nice guy, his co=host Debbie Thrower is another professional.

I am afraid that the regional news presenters on ITV Wales news are not fit to wipe Fred's glasses.

Fred has been at Meridian and TVS and Southern before them since the day TV was invented - or so it seems!

For those of a certain age----- HOW!

How! There's a programme that wouldn't get made nowadays - at least not with that sort of cast whose combined age must have been about 312. Has anyone else ever really been called Bunty?

And who would have thought Fred was the author of a book on the Kray twins?

Jack Hargreaves must have been at least 312 when I saw him on How in 1966, a decade later he was still at it still in How and "Out Of Town." I think Paul Whitehouse drew inspiration from Jack's out of town show when he created Bob Fleming on the Fast Show.

If anyone is interested you can get Out Of Town on Dvd, but Horlicks is just as good for inducing a good night;s sleep.

Southern also gave us the avuncular Jack Hargreaves. Jack conceived and appeared on How! and he also gave us Out of Town and other gentle, meandering looks around the region.

But Jack was also one of the main instigators of the whole ITV network and he was a director at Southern.

Aww, Jack was great. Gentle, but great.
You beat me to it with this comment but see what I say about how he was really one of the powers behind ITV and Southern in particular.

Jack died in 1994

Never forget Fred's on the spot reporting of the Hungerford massacre. That was incongruous!

Jack Hargreaves the first person who didn't live in London I ever knew, at least it seemed that way when I was a nipper.

Southern ITV made a strong contribution to Children's programming - other shows included Worzel Gummidge with Jon Pertwee and the serialisations of Enid Blyton's "Famous Five". Their senior continuity announcer was Brian Nissen, an actor who had roles in some classic British films including "They were sisters", "The Dam Busters" and "Richard III". Sadly missed.
