High Chapparell!

A beautiful - often poetic - series covering the whole range of the genre's themes as well as being a nicely acted family drama.

I was brought up with this show. The characaters semm like family to me. It's been off our screens too long.

And unavailable on DVD! (apart from horribly expensive pirate copies)

I'd like to see the Wagon Train episode 'The Jesse Cowan Story' (1958) because it featured a bravura perfomance by Lee Van Cleef (aged 33!) Also The Tall Man TV series (1960-62) that starred Barry Sullivan as Pat Garrett and Clu Gulagher as Billy the Kid. I don't think it was ever shown in the UK, unless anyone knows different?

I only recently noticed Roger Moore did this in the 1960's. How did that happen I wonder. He took over from James Garner. Seems very odd. I don't remember him in that at all.

His US series The Alaskans was cancelled but he was still under contract ... so, when Garner got the hump and left Sir Rog stepped into the breach playing the English cousin Beau Maverick.

Warner Brothers TV were notoriously stingy with actors salaries, and if I remember rightly, James Garner simply refused to continue. Fortunately for him, he was by then a big enough name to pursue a big screen career. Roger Moore, however, was contractually obliged to step into his costume (literally - it still had Garner's name in it), and even, legend has it, perform some of the Garner's old scripts with the character names changed.

I can't remember his name off the top of my head, but the lead in another Warner TV Western, Colt 45, went on strike due to poor money and having to perform dangerous stunts. He never worked in Hollywood again, though he did turn up in a few Spaghetti Westerns later in the sixties.

It was Wade Preston. The same thing happened on both the Lone Ranger and Cheyenne series .... John Hart replacing Clayton Moore for one season and Ty Hardin taking over the reins from Clint Walker before getting his own series.
