For me my favourite character was Mrs Bridges played by Angela Baddeley. She always liked a bit of tittle-tattle (Gossip).

My favourite character was, and always will be Lady Marjorie Bellamy, to me Rachel Gurney really was the centre of the Family, though unfortunately Rachel wanted to leave after the first two seasons as she didn't want to be typecast, even more tragic was the fact Rachel later regretted her decision to leave the series, and I always felt the programme was never quite the same, she could hardly be bought back after drowning on the Titanic......

Alfred the crazy gay footman, just behind Mr Bellamy in your picture, was an excellent, rather Dickensian character, who the producers probably wouldn't have ditched had they known the series would be renewed for a second season.

Yes, I guess you're right there Captain!.......I recall the episode when Alfred was on the run after murdering his Master, Upstairs Downstairs dealt with Homosexuality way before other Programmes had the courage to do so........sadly Alfred was hanged

Correct. He appears in the first half of season one (the b/w episodes) as a crazy Bible-basher who then runs off with a German baron (Rose finds them in bed together). He returns in season three for a one-off but he was a real loss. As was the dowtrodden Irish scullery maid who committed suicide in season one (causing Mrs Bridges to have a nervous breakdown and kidnap a baby).

I would marry Upstairs Downstairs if British law wasn't so unsympathetic about the pure love between Captain and ITV Sunday Drama Series.

You are a friend of Jean Marsh? She seems to be a very intelligent, likeable and warm person.

I recognize your name from the credits on American television shows, from the 80s. Are you a director? Please forgive my foolishness if I am wrong, or if everyone on the forum knows this but me.

Yes, it was a great popular success here - when it was first run and for many years after.

It was on Sunday nights and I can remember as a boy the anticipation in my family when a new seasoin began - and the sadness when it ended.

It changed the general perception of British television here, along with Monty Python, which reached a very different audience.

Upstairs Downstairs was perhaps the only example I can think of where a show began as an expertly made "soap" and quickly transformed into an outstanding drama. I watched most of the episodes again a few years ago with my family and I realized how very, very good that series is: really superb.

Thanks Batman

Then I was correct and that list includes almost all of the major US network dramatic series from that period - and he is here on the forum as a regular poster. Very nice.

I think I would have to choose Gordon Jackson's Mr Hudson, firm but fair. GJ was a favourite actor too.

Oh - I forgot to answer the thread question...

Two favorites: Richard: a good man who became the rock of the family. I thought David Langton was under-rated as an actor.

And Georgina. Beautiful. Just beautiful.
