Default Comedy Character Actor Robert Gilespie

Robert Gilespie was a fixture on brit telly comedies in the seventies, usually playing sarcastic policemen in shows such as Man About the House, he did star in a family sitcom but he never made the big time. I always liked him.

The sitcom you are thinking of is Keep It In The Family, where Gillespie played Dudley Rush,an eccentric cartoonist who lived in Highgate Avenue,Highgate with his wife Muriel(Pauline Yates),and daughters Susan(Stacy Dorning) and Jacqui (Jenny Quayle, later Sabrina Franklyn0. He was a cartoonist who worked for Duncan Thomas, played by Glyn Houston. There was also another character,a glove puppet, whom Dudley talked to when he was drawing his cartoons.
I used to like it myself,as it was rarity of being an ITV comedy that was funny.
It went through a sea change and was made in the USA called Too Close For Comfort starring the late Ted Knight.
I could be wrong, but I think Keep It In The Family was inspired by My World And Welcome To It,which starred the ever dependable William Windom.

He is still with us. Following a much publicised personal 'scandal' he disappeared from TV. He now runs his own theatre company for which he both acts and directs.

I wish I had claws.

I can't recall the exact details, but he got himself embroiled in some allegations about his sex life and the tabloids really went for him.

I wish I had claws.

RG has a credit missing from IMDB. He played 'Mr Dent', an official from the Planning Department in 'The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin' (series 3, episode 4, 'Communal Social Evenings'). I have tried to update his entry but it keeps getting rejected. If anyone wants to help...........

A true genius of the deadpan gaze. His desk sergeant in Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads is hillarious.

All men leak.

I've submitted it. They listed him on some other sites about The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin. Some suggest that that was where he met Paula Yates who would be his co-star in Keep it in the Family.

Robert Gillespie was also very good as the chairman of the resident's association in the episode of The Good Life where the Goods want to keep pigs and Margot objects. Margo of course assumes that the chairman of the resident's association will be on her side

I remember Channel Four showing "My World and Welcolm To It, circa 83, it was based on the work of James Thurber. Only ran for one season in 1969, Leslie Haliwell thought highly of the show in his Telegoers Companion and said of the show,"of course it was too good for the public."

William Windom was a semi regular on "Murder She Wrote." wasnt he.
