This classic and much missed soaps was famous for its ropey acting and poor production values, but there were some very silly storylines and some delicously risible moments.
I remeber the days when Meg's second husband Makcolm Rider tried to bump her off, shortly after this near tragedy Meg got all emotional and proceeded to launch in to a tearful rendition of, Pet Clark.s ,"Dont Sleep in the Subway1. Another storyline of roughly the same vintage saw Meg imprisioned for knocking down Vince Parker on his motorbike. Another personal favourite was a plotline featuring Trevor Bannister playing a set of twins. I once read that there was an implausible plotline where Amy Turtle was mistaken for Russian Spy. |

I never actually watched - is it really true that Benny would step out to fetch a spanner and then disappear to do panto for six months? And here's real Crossroads moment that must have made the audience wonder what drugs the writers were on. |

Arthur Brownlow (the head of a working class family included in the programme as a contrast to the toffs like Meg Richardson and David Hunter) was told by a doctor that he had 6 months to live. Cue highly dramatic scenes and emotional turmoil for the ensuing 6 months, only for Arthur to be told by the doctors, Oh sorry, we made a mistake, you're fine.
In another storyline, Benny was about to get married to a mysterious beauty, who was hit by a car and killed on her way to the wedding. Another time somebody was sabotaging the food in the hotel restaurant (I remember there was a shot of a hand putting dead spiders in a sugar bowl) - it turned out the culprit was Shughie McFee. |

New producers a few years later wanted to bring Noelle back into the fold in the mid-80's and she was all signed up to reappear, but sadly she died the very week she was due to commence filming.......

Stephanie De Sykes introducing the song,"Born With a smile on my face." Someone did one for Meg and Hugh Mortmimers wedding. |
