But to answer your rhetorical question I'll just remind you of one Sarah Ferguson

There have been other examples throughout history like the Duchess of Kent, Mrs Simpson and so on back through history

Oooh, I don't know - Parker-Bowles still isn't very well liked at all, certainly not by me!

Even if what you say is true about the princes future wives - why should it bother you? If people want to look daft, fawn over them and hang about for hours in the rain, wind and snow, that's entirely up to them. However, people have to be pretty devoted to do that.
Just watch them on TV in your warm, dry living room and laugh at them like I do!

I would point out that the present royals are only following the ancestors. Thus Edward V11 had numerous mistreses and Edward V111 was romancing a divorcee.Queen Mary was a well known for taking articles wherever she went whether or not the owner liked it.Duke of Kent(killed in the war) was bi sexual as was Lord Mountbatten.Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother was a helpless spendthrift.Just think we subsidised her gambling for which Ladbrokes must have been thankful.

Might be wrong, but I believe it was William Hill...and the sums were tiny, in the way of old dears the nation over. Certainly compared to the costs of her an her daughter keeping their horses in training....

What about the substantial overdaft with Coutts?Doubt that your bankers would be so helpful to you to keep you in fags ,booze and the gee gees if you are fortunate enough to live to 102.

Are you saying that Queen Mary actually used to pinch things?

Well, she used to suggest, via a flunkey, to people entertaining her, that such-and-such knick-knack would make a nice gift to mark her visit....apparently, people would hide their best items before she arrived, once word got around....

Here's a good Queen Mary story from the DNB
Quote:
On countless public outings to baby camps and bazaars, to hospitals and city centres, her much noted reserve and dignified bearing—topped off by the ubiquitous toque—enhanced the sense of occasion, but could make presiding officials tremulous. On one memorable visit to a London hospital she refused to plant a tree because the red carpet that had been rolled out before her did not extend to the commemorative spade. Before the ceremony could proceed, a footman had to cut off the carpet at the other end and place the remnant at her feet.
