Default The Duke (of Edinburgh)

Well I expect Phil the Greek is a bit worried now that ITV have just broadcast what looks suspiciously like an obituary about him.

They took two evenings with an hour each evening to tell us about all the good work he used to do while he was still alive. Oh, is he still alive? You'd never know it if you watched any of the program

We saw Trevor McDonald trying to see how many times he could say "Sir" in a single sentence.

We heard mention that Philip had said a few rude and cheeky things to some people - but it seems that they couldn't find any actual examples.

What a strange program

Steve

He is occasionally wheeled out as a source of entertainment, just to remind us all that he's still alive and more to the point that he's still capable of putting his size 12's in wherever he goes.
He should stick to shooting game in Scotland.

I am always suspicious of tv 'documentary profiles' produced by 'independent companies'
which provide 'exclusive access' due to the connections of the royal personage running the outfit...

This reminds me of a US doc about Frank Sinatra, which told us that :

- Frank was the greatest voice of the 20th century.

- Frank was a great philanthropist.

-Franks' 'friends' were interviewed who, without exception all said what a great guy he was, and that he was a devoted family man.

Do we really want to watch a 2 hour PR 'documentary' on the Duke, when there is so much more that could be said.....

I`m definately NOT a royalist so didn`t watch it, but the bits I did bump into really annoyed me, not with the Duke but the way Trevor McDonald kept calling him Sir, as has already been said. IN FACT, I would hate to live my life like that, where people went on like that with me.

But HANG ON! Did the Duke constantly call Trevor Sir throughout the programme too? If not maybe he should have . That would have been funny!

xx

We`re changin` lodggggggggings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I thought both programes were very good!.......Prince Philip is obviously keen on the progress of young people, hence his awards scheme, plus he's into conservation issues without the sentementality being the realist that he is, for travel for engagements within central London he was the one of the first to be 'green' about it with his battery Van, he's not a snob either, neither is the Queen or anyone else in our great Royal Family!

He did exactly the same with Tony Bliar on an awards show once - I needed an anti-emetic after about 5 minutes; it was gross.

DS x.

I find Trevor McDonut much more offensive that Phil the Greek. Phil may be an irascible old grump ... but at least he says it as he sees it, whether one agrees with him or not.

I remember when Sinatra suddenly started being referred to as "Ol' Blue Eyes". That was a PR exercise to overtake the "Cranky Frankie" tag - which it did. Not sure if this is correct, but I read that Sinatra himself came up with the tag "Ol' Blue Eyes" and that's when they released the album of that name. Ring-a-ding-ding.

All those docos about the Royal Family in which the the royals themselves participate are always purely for PR purposes. Although I'm a repbulican, I love watching those programmes. It fascinates me that all that pomp and circumstance still exists in the 21st century. I know England wouldn't be England without it, but in practical terms there's no reason for it in this day and age.
Ah, but I'm skating on thin ice here, methinks!

You should have watched it, then you'd know what he really does

Even Andrew Neil had some telling comments on the difference between the way he is reported and what he actually does
