Wink Granada Tv's Cinema Programme

I never hear any mention anywhere of Granadas Cinema magazine programme that started in the sixties and ran on until the seveties.

Firstly I remember Mike Scott (the man who always looked as if he was permanaently smiling) introducing it then Michael Parkinson took over and Clive James succeeded him.

After that there were guest presenters George Melly and Brian Sewell.

Cinema did show clips from up and coming films of the day but I remember that the shows had a theme, during Michael Parkinsons tenure there was a good edition about horror movies.

Granada tv tended to specialise in good cinema programmes, the childrens series Clapperboard with Chris Kelly was an excellent show which had some similarities with the earlier "Cinema."

Leslie Haliwell would turn up as a guest ocasionally.

There was also a good Schools programme about the cinema introduced by Brian Trueman, but I cannot recall its titile.

Do you remember ALL OUR YESTERDAYS (Granada) presented by Brian Inglis ?

They just used to show old newsreels with the original commentary. It ran for years and years...But why ?

It was like a day by day account of the 2nd World War seen from all sides.

A brilliant programme!!

All our Yesterdays was originally presented by James cameron who had been a foreign correspondent at the time of the events depicted.I watched it every week and thought it was brilliant.I even have the LP produced in conjunction with the series.

Have to agree a fabulous programme, now what a DVD set that would make !, presuming that the episodes all still exist ?

That was a golden era for Granada.

World in Action 1963 - 99
All Our Yesterdays 1960 - 89
What the Papers Say 1956 -
University Challenge 1962 -
Coronation Street 1960 -
Seven Up 1964 -

They also gave us Jewel In The Crown, Brideshead Revisited, and the Childrens' film review
Programme Clapperboard with Chris Kelly.

I always consider myself fortunate to have grown up in that time and in the Granada region. They never talked down to the viewer.
I would love to see All Our Yesterdays return. You'd think with all the interest in history, a programme which can cover the last fifty years or so could command a large audience.

in the late eighties and on till 1993 Thames tv showed Gaumont British newsreels of 50 years previous at 3am in the morning.Alas this ended in 1993 when Thames lost their franchise. However it enabled me to record about 7 years worth of GB newsreels.

I loved the Pathe Year to Rembember videos that came out in the nineties, these video year by year comilations were supervised by Sir David Frost, I had some on video, I think they are still available on now on dvd.

I dont think there are many movietone compilations available, I did look on Amazon a few months ago but couldnt see much. This is a pity.

Actually the first presenter of CINEMA (and I am so glad someone else remembers it) was Bamber Gascoigne who did an excellent job. Another long term presenter not already mentioned was Derek Grainger.
It was usually tucked away at 10:30 on a Thursday (in my region) but it was forever bumped until later if anything special came on.

Thanks for the info re Bamber Gasgoine being the first presenter of Cinema. When I started the thread I had a feeling that Mike Scott wasnt the first presenter.

I know what you mean abou the late night scheduling 10.30 on a Thursday was the time it was shown on HTV.

Tried searching for some info about the Cinema programme on the net, havent found anything yet, the usual nostalgia websites might have something on it, though.

There was no mention of ths show on the Wiklopedia entry for Granada tv, similarly no link to the show when I looked up Parkinson, Clive James and Mike Scott.

It seems that this worthy show has been largely forgotten.

I read somewhere that Granada television's archive keeping is the worst in the ITV Network. It would appear a DVD release to be unlikely if that's the case.

May be slightly off-thread, and I'm not sure who made them, but I recall a series called 'Time to Remember' which was made up of newsreels and narrated by an impressive bunch of people: Michael Redgrave, Basil Rathbone, Niall Macginnis, Edith Evans and others. Each episode started with a shot of a pendulum from a Grandfather clock and the opening lines 'I remember a time...'
I think Channel 4 repeated some of them about 20 years ago, before they got bogged down with horse-racing.

I remember the show it used to kick off daytime programmes in my HTV regionin the seventies, All Our Yesterdays also fulfilled the same function.
