Cool Who Watched The Test Card

It fascinated me as a child and I watched it regurlarly, I used to listen to the music and even that awful high pitched tuning signal "oooooooooooh."

My Mother thought my interest in the test card was a little bit perverse and said that it was a waste of electiricity.

In fairness at some point in the day the test card was all that was being transmitted.

In adulthood I became intereseted in articles about the Test Card Circle a smallband of enthusiasts who are interested in the music broacast on the test card.

I have a couple of cd's of test card music the best of these were two volumes put out by Chandos,"The Girl On the Test Card." and Big Band Width.

It made me realise that test card music could be quality stuff and was not cheesy musak. There were composostions by respected composers such as Frank Chacksfield.

Admitedly on other cd's issued by aPOLLO Sound there are a couple of cheesy pieces that sound like stuff heard over the P.A. at B and Q, but test card music would definitely be of interest to anyone who has an interest in light orchestral music.

A friend of mine did some schools tv when she was a child in the 1970s (Merry Go Round I think) and years later found that a picture of her had been used as a Test Card on a Hong Kong cable channel!

I couldn't agree more, Carmel - it's all rather worrying, isn't it?

Still, it takes all sorts I suppose.......................

Can't be any worse than watching "Big Brother." and The Jeremy Kyle Show.

I don't know The Jeremy Kyle Show but I'd certainly much rather watch the test card than Big Brother - well, as long as the little girl didn't start talking to me. Now that would be a worry!

I recall coming home and/or bunking off School and just sitting there waiting for something, anything to come on.........nice music was generally played to accompany the test card while I was waiting though!

I used to watch the BBC test card quite a lot in the early sixties.
There was an accordion-based band which played some very good original numbers, apparently led by a man named Joe Rossi.
There was also some music by either Benny Goodman or Sidney Bechet, can't remember which at this distance.
I also recall a little Rachmaninov and some pastoral-type music by someone like Delius or Elgar.

All in all, it was better than a lot of the stuff on the radio at the time. :nerd:

I would watch the BBC test card occasionally in the seventies, as they had Live and Let Die on their rota od back ground music. This was the actual version by Wings, and youcan't imagine the BBC would have wanted to pay raylaties for that use, so I think someone was being naughty.
